Obituary of Alberta Robinson Gibson Hines -- 2009

KINSTON - Alberta Robinson Gibson Hines, 99, of 2519 Tower Hill Road, entered into the 
light of God on Sunday, January 11, 2009, at her home. 
 
She was born on June 20, 1909, in Wilmington, North Carolina to Joseph and Annie James 
Robinson. 
 
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Joseph Jr., and James Robinson; sister, 
Mary Robinson; and her husband David Henry Hines. Mrs. Hines attended the public schools 
in New Hanover County, graduating from Willingston Industrial High School. She received both 
her AB and BS degrees from Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City, North Carolina 
and Winston-Salem State University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina respectively, in Elementary 
Education. She earned a Master's degree from Columbia University New York, New York in 
Early Childhood Education. She taught a total of 43 years in Brunswick and Lenoir counties, 
before retiring from R.H. Lewis Elementary School Kinston, North Carolina in 1973. 
She is a member of St. Augustus A.M.E.Z. Methodist Church where she served in many 
capacities including President Emeritus, of the Altar Guild, Class Leader, the L.C. Perry 
Missionary Society, the Usher Board and a life member of the Women's Home & Foreign Mission. 
She was a charter member of the Kinston Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and held 
membership in the NC Teachers Association, NC Retired Personnel, Winston-Salem State 
University Alumni Association and a past member of SOHS Social/Civic Club. Mrs. Hines served 
as the Chaplain's secretary and as a Pink Lady Volunteer at Lenoir Memorial Hospi-tal. She 
worked as a Welcome Wagon Hostess in the Kinston Community for over five years. She was 
a lover of flowers and grew many for her church altar, family, and friends. 
 
She is survived by two stepchildren, Frances Hines of Bladenburg, Md., and Kay Hines Jones, of 
Landover Hills, Md. Her adopted families include the Hardys, Korengays, Islers and Peggy Cogdell 
Sessoms, all of Kinston, North Carolina; the Purcells of Fayetteville, North Carolina; Issac Darden 
Jr. of Washington, D.C.; a lifelong friend, Inez Richardson of Wilmington, North Carolina and an 
endearing co-worker Madeline Curtis (Steve) of Raleigh, North Caro-lina; and very special 
caretakers Mrs. Essie Brimage, Ms. Eula Carter, Mrs. Deluis Davis, and Mrs. Alma Shepherd. 
 
Due to work-in-progress in the sanctuary of St. Augustus AMEZ Church, the family will receive 
friends for visitation from 7-8 p.m. Thursday, January 15 at St. James AME Church on Shine Street. 
The Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will perform the Omega Omega Services at 7:15 p.m. Funeral 
service will also be held at St. James AME Church on Friday at noon. Arrangements by Albritton-
Carraway Funeral Home.
