and grew up in the Chinquapin community in Jones County. She graduated from
Trenton High School and was also a graduate of ECTC (now ECU), with a degree
in home economics and science. She taught vocational home economics at
Dover and Williamston high schools, after which she joined the North Carolina
Agriculture Extension Service. She first served as associate agent in Pitt County
and then as extension agent in New Hanover County for 22 years.

Throughout her entire life, Miss Lowery was an active member of Shady Grove
United Methodist Church until sickness slowed her down. She taught the Addie
Heart Sunday School Class for many years, was chairperson of the Council of
Ministry, and was president of the United Methodist Women. Also, she served on
the Board of Trustees, was chairperson of the Building Committee when Shady
Grove Church was remodeled, and was very active in landscaping the church grounds.
In 1978, she received a life membership in the local United Methodist Women and
was named Woman of the Year by this same organization. Miss Lowery was church
historian and she wrote the history of Shady Grove United Methodist Church in 1984.
During Miss Lowery's professional career, she was active in county, district, state and
national organizations of the Agriculture Extension Service, serving in various
capacities - as state president of the N.C. Extension Agent Association and as the
representative of the association at national meetings in Chicago, Illinois, Fort Worth,
Texas and Minneapolis, Minnesota. In addition, she was a member of Epsilon Sigma,
the State Employees Association of N.C., and the National Association of Extension
Home Economics.
Over the years, Miss Lowery received numerous recognitions and awards. In 1956,

In speaking of Miss Lowery when she retired from extension in 1973 in Wilmington,
Mrs. C.M. Foster wrote in her book, I Had to Climb That Tree: "…she was quiet, modest,
unselfish and never personally sought the limelight - rather she worked hard to give others
an opportunity to excel. She would accept any responsibility - one of those people who
give of themselves. Along the way, she touched the lives of countless individuals and
left much of herself behind."
Serving as pallbearers will be her nephews, John David Lowery, Raymond Morgan
Lowery, James Franklin Lowery, Jr., W. Wilson Lowery, Jr., Walter Simmons Lowery,

Franklin, John Owen

CHAPEL HILL- John Owen Franklin, 61, of Montevallo, Ala.,, formerly of Chapel
Hill, N.C., passed away Saturday, August 16, 2008, at the home of his devoted
sister, Lynda Frank-lin. He spent his final hours surrounded by the love of his
family and dear friend, Pat Minges. John was born in Lumberton, N.C. on July 16,
1947, and grew up in Ayden and Grif-ton, N.C. He was predeceased by his father,
James Grady Franklin and mother, Rosalie Stokes Franklin of Grifton. John had a
varied background on stage and television as an actor, set and lighting designer,
stage manager, stylist, production designer, film editor, producer, dancer,
choreographer, director and teacher. He studied applied art and art history at
UNC-Chapel Hill, received his BFA magna cum laude from UNC-Greensboro in
technical theatre design and his MFA from UNC-Chapel Hill in costume design.
John began a career as an interior designer at A.B. Whitley, Inc. and Stuart Walston,
Inc., top design firms in eastern N.C. Realizing his love for the theatre, John returned
to graduate school. He began his professional career in theatre as a makeup artist
with the NC PBS Television Network, which led to feature film work, commercials,
print, and several years touring the U.S. for Lancome-Paris. John designed costumes
for academic, regional and community theater productions throughout the Southeast.
For seven years, John taught classes, and was the resident costume designer on
more than 75 productions, at the Raleigh Little Theatre (RLT). When time permitted,
he also designed makeup, hair and wigs for several regional theatres and Broadway
tours. Leaving his RLT family was a difficult decision, but in 2001, John's strong desire
to teach the next generation of theatre majors led him to the University of Montevallo
(UM) in Montevallo, Ala. John's seven years at UM, were his most fulfilling, both
professionally and personally. As Assistant Professor, he enjoyed working with the
theatre faculty and his beloved students immensely. John was honored to receive the
2005-2006 College of Fine Arts Distinguished Teacher Award and proudly accepted
tenure in 2006-2007. John is survived by his sister, Lynda Franklin of Durham, N.C.;
and his half brothers, Wayne A. Clark of Rock Hill, S.C. and Charles S. Clark of
