KINSTON - Bob Dean Worthington, 66, of Kinston passed away on Thursday, January 22, 2009. Mr. Worthington was born in Lenoir County on August 23, 1942 to Lottie Harper Williams and the late George Worthington. In addition to his father, he is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Harper of Kinston. Mr. Worthington will be remembered as a loving family man, avid linguist, and was an active member of Gordon Street Christian Church where he taught Sunday School. He was a magna cum laude gradate of the University of Maryland with majors in English and French and received a Juris Doctorate from the Campbell University School of Law. He practiced law in Kinston from 1979 until 2005 when he retired due to health reasons. He is a veteran of the United States Navy where he served in Naval Intelligence as a Russian and Malagasy linguist. He previously served on the Kinston Planning Board, as well as on the Lenoir County Social Services Board, as appointed by former Governor James B. Hunt. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Hall Worthington, of the home; two sons, Asheford "Ashe" Hall Worthington, also of the home, and Dean Walter Worthington and wife Gray of Greenville, NC; one grandchild, Lyndee Worthington; a sister, Donna Creel and husband, Robert of Kinston; two brothers, Milton Holt of Newport News, VA, and Maurice Partin of Columbia, MD; and various nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, January 26, 2009 at Gordon Street Christian Church with Rev. Mark Benson officiating. Visitation will be held immediately following the service at the church at 118 E. Gordon St., Kinston, NC 28501. Memorial Contributions may be made to Gordon Street Christian Church.
