Boone Jr., William Chaffin

Kinston - William Chaffin Boone, Jr. (Bill, Billy or Pappy) reluctantly but peacefully left this life on
February 11, 2009, after a lengthy illness, one day before his 85 birthday.
Born February 12, 1924, he was the son of W.C. Boone, Sr. and Georgia Bizzell Boone. Bill was born
in Kinston, but lived in Tsingtao, China where his father worked for the British American Tobacco
Company. When he was fourteen, the Boones returned to Kinston. Billy graduated from Kinston High
School in 1940 and then attended the Georgia Military Academy for a year. In 1941, he enrolled in the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, but left UNC in 1943 to enlist in the Army Air Corps.
As a member of the 315th Bomb Wing, he served as a bombardier on a B-29 in the Pacific Theater and
flew the last mission of the war off of Guam. Three years ago, he visited the World War II Memorial in
Washington, D.C. with two of his grandsons and gave them a history lesson they will never forget. After
the war, Pappy returned to the States, re-enrolled in UNC, and after a great deal of fun, went to work for
five years with the Export Leaf Tobacco Company.
In 1953, he was employed by Frosty Morn Meats, serving at the Kinston plant in several capacities
including Secretary-Treasurer, Corporate Comptroller, Vice-President, and finally Plant Manager.
Following the closing of the Kinston plant, Bill worked briefly for the Robert Hill Construction Company
and the Baker & Hudock dental office. In 1981, Bill became the Executive Director of the local shop of the
Lions Industries for the Blind, a position which he described as his most satisfying work experience.
Throughout his working career, he was known as a fair, honest and loyal employee and a supervisor who
always expected and encouraged the best from those who worked with him. Billy was an active member
of Gordon Street Christian Church and an ardent advocate of the deeply held values of the Christian Church
(Disciples of Christ). He actively resisted any attempt to define Christian faith legalistically or narrowly, and
defended the historic Disciple principles of unity and freedom of thought. To say that Billy had problems
with people who thought that they were the only Christians is a profound understatement. Billy Boone was
never without a joke, never in the company of a stranger, a mediocre golfer who loved the game anyway, a
devoted husband, father and grandfather, and frequently presided over spontaneous community gatherings
at the Olympian restaurant.
He is survived by his wife, Jane McDaniel Boone; three children, William C. Boone, III of Winthrop, Mass.,
Sarah Boone Mooty (Michael) of Lexington Ky., and Georgeanna Boone English (Doug) of Fayetteville, N.C.
He is the proud Granddaddy of seven grandsons, Sgt. Boone Mooty, Caleb Mooty, William English,
Christopher English, Matthew English, and the twins, Alex and Will Boone.
We are especially grateful for the unending love, support and affection of his company of angels - Kathryn
Paylor, Sebie Hewitt, Becky Darst, Beth Green, Laura Brody, Pam Summerlin, Georgia Floyd and last, but
certainly not least, Dr. "Junie Babe" Rose.
A celebration of Billy's life will be held Saturday, February 14 at 1 p.m. in the sanctuary of Gordon Street
Christian Church with The Rev. Mark Benson officiating. The family will greet friends in the fellowship hall
 following the service.
We are confident that God's eternal realm is a funnier, happier place now that Bill has joined friends like
Peter, Roland, Cicero, Sarah, Graham, Fats, who is probably still cheating at kickball, and Joe, who is
still going out to get the Free Press in his boxers. May they all rest in happiness.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts will be welcomed at Gordon Street Christian Church. Ed-wards Funeral
Home is in charge of arrangements. Sign the guest book at www.kinston.com
