GEORGE SIMMONS DEAD AT AGE 77 “Grew Up With Kinston” Funeral Wednesday Afternon George F. Simmons, 77, well-known merchant, died in a hospital at 7 a.m. Tuesday. He succumbed to a combination of ailments, ill for weeks, his condition became critical at the weekend. Mr. Simmons was known to thousands in and around the city. He “grew up with Kinston” and few persons knew the city better. He was a man of good appearance. Until recently he appeared little past the prime of life. Few persons of his age could boast as much energy. He was known as a good business man. Many years ago he was a policeman. Surviving are a widow Mrs. Cattie Taylor Simmons and four daughters, Mrs. Rudolph Fordham, Mrs. Lila Bell and Mrs. Ruth Garthwright, of Kinston, and Mrs. Bertha Anderson of Ayden. Also surviving are a number of grandchildren. The funeral, Rev. Ruppert Phillips, of the Disciples of Christ, and Rev. Jack R. Rountree, Episcopalian, officiating, will be from the residence, 504 North Heritage Street, at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery.
