Obituary of Harold Darcy Small -- 2008

KINSTON - Harold Darcy Small of 331 Camellia Street, Kinston passed away on Sunday, 
September 14, 2008. The son of the late Georgia M. and Lewis Small of Pleasant Hill, he 
was born February 3, 1925. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his 
brothers and sisters, Christine Small Taylor, Major Small, Lester Small, Catherine Small 
Reynolds Harris, and Louise Small Lee. Raised and educated in Jones County, he was 
valedictorian of his class at Comfort High School in 1940. He then graduated from Coyne 
Electrical School in Chicago, Ill. At the end of World War II, he served aboard the U.S.S. 
Paricutin and returned to active service in the Navy during the Korean Conflict. He then 
joined DuPont, where he was employed as an electrician for 34 years until retirement in 
1987. A lifelong member of the Christian Church, he first attended and served at Pleasant 
Hill Christian Church. He moved his membership to Southwood Memorial Christian Church 
in 1965, where he served in many capacities including Elder, choir member, Sunday 
School Superintendent and Chairman of the Board. He was a member of the Woodmen 
of the World for 60 years and of the Southwood Ruritan Club for 43 years. He was a charter 
member of the Goldmine Hunt-ing Club and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also loved 
local sports and was a sup-porter of South Lenoir High School teams and UNC basketball. 
He was a member of the UNC Rams Club. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Margaret 
Grace Martin Small of the home; daughters, Diane Small Griffin, Dixie Small Whaley and 
husband Jon, Darcie Small Bumgarner and husband Roy (Sonny), Jody Small Hill and 
husband Scott (Scotty); grand-children, Evans Griffin, Blake Griffin, Nikki Whaley Carlyle 
and husband Mike, Ryan Whaley and fianc?e Erin Barker, Kara Whaley Howard and 
husband Jerry, Jeff Bumgarner and wife Jenny, Alyssa Bumgarner and fianc? David Comer, 
Zack Bumgarner and wife Kathy, Joseph Bumgarner, Amanda Hill, Andrew Hill and Anna Hill; 
great-grandchildren, Lathan, Riley and Luke Bumgarner, Jon Andrew, Gracie and Jacob 
Howard, and Nathan Carlyle. He is also survived by his siblings, Ruby S. Small, Richard 
(Dickie) Small, Jewel Small Greer, and Hilda Small Taylor; brother-in-law, Herbert Martin; 
sisters-in-law, Sue Martin Andrews and Maxine Martin Bell; and numerous nieces, nephews, 
cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held at Southwood Memorial Christian Church 
on Wednes-day, September 17, 2008, at 7 p.m. with the Reverends Rick Vernon and Dexter 
Wasson offi-ciating. The family will greet friends after the service at the church, and other 
times at the home. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Christian Church at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, 
September 18, 2008. Memorials may be made to Southwood Memorial Christian Church,
