June 16, 1988. The following obituary appeared in the Kinston Daily Free Press, Kinston, NC. "JAMES A. MERRITT - Sgt. James A. "Jimmy" Merritt, 80, of 1103 Margaret Lane, died Thursday at his home. He was a member of Queen Street United Methodist Church, Kinston Host Lions Club, Elks Lodge, Methodist Mens group, and active in State Employees Association. He was a retired Sargeant with the N.C. Highway Patrol and State Weight Division. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday from Queen Street Methodist Church with Rev. Randall Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mildred Braxton Merritt of the home; a sister, Mrs. Virginia Merritt Carr of Wilmington. The family will receive friends at the home. Memorial contributions may be made to Queen Street Methodist Church, P. O. Box 508, Kinston, NC 28501 or to the American Heart Association, P. O. Box 63, Kinston, NC. 28501."
