He received his Nuclear Engineering Degree in 1955 from the University of North Carolina at State and did his graduate studies at the University of Virginia. Richard retired in 1987 after dedicated service to his country. President Jimmy Carter had appointed Richard as a charter member of the Senior Executive Service in July, 1979. He was listed in the Who's Who in the South and Southwest in 1966. Richard's accomplishments included several patents for Reactor designs. He worked on the designs of Reactors that powered the N.S. Savannah, the world's first nuclear powered merchant ship. Richard was the lead engineer on the Breeder Reactor and worked as a consultant for the Department of Energy until he retired in 2002. Richard fought a valiant battle with Parkinson's Disease for more than 12 years. H0is quiet, kind spirit and devotion to his God made him an unforgettable person. Published in the Free Press from 1/15/2009 - 1/18/2009 Webber, James Harold GOLDSBORO - James Harold Webber, 80, passed away early Wednesday morning at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family. Harold was born in Wayne County on April 10, 1928, to the late James Roland Webber and Vivian Ann Grant Webber of the Elroy Community. He was a 1945 graduate of New Hope School. He then became a carpenter and millwright building feed mills in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. He built his own feed mill in 1950 on U.S. 70 East which is still in operation today as New Hope Milling Company and he also founded Jones County Grain in Trenton. Harold, with support from his late wife, Frances F. Webber, brought the commercial chicken business to Wayne and surrounding counties. They built a second feed mill on Millers Chapel Road and a hatchery in the Mar Mac Community. In 1994 they built a chicken processing plant on Pecan Road, which operates today as Case Farms Goldsboro Division. Harold and Frances also owned and operated Webbers Hatchery. He brought many jobs to the agricultural business community of Wayne and surrounding counties. Harold was a very dedicated and faithful member of New Hope Friends Church his entire life and he loved his church. Harold helped many people and will be missed by many. The son of Robert B. Christman and Nora Mae Mewborn Christman, he was born April 21, 1924, at the Mewborn Plantation home in the Fort Run Community of Greene County. Mr. Christman attended the Snow Hill School for all of his primary education and while in high school was a part of the choir and had the opportunity to travel to the World's Fair and to New York to participate in choral events. Following graduation, he entered the US Army Air Corps (now the US Air Force). He served during WWII, and while never having to leave the states, he achieved top security clearances and worked with electrical equipment and design on US Bombers. After service to his country, he returned to Snow Hill where he was a member of the American Legion and a member of the First Baptist Church where he once again became a part of a choir. Mr. Christman's health began to fail him at an early age in life and limited his abilities to be as active as he would have wished in his community and church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Wooten Christman, who died January 15, 2008.
