May 20, 1972. The following obituary appeared in the Sun Journal, New Bern, NC. "JOE B. BLAND: Joe Ball Bland, 74,of Route 2, New Bern, (Spring Garden section) died Friday morning at 4:40 o'clock at Craven County Hospital. He was a retired farmer. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3:30 p.m. from Garner's Funeral Chapel in Kinston by Rev. Rudy Sheppard, pastor of Wintergreen Free Will Baptist Church, assisted by Rev. Herman Orr, pastor of Spring Garden Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery in Kinston. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Irene Ormond Bland; four daughters, Mrs. Edgar Gilbert of Skyesville, Md., Mrs. Joe Adams of Route 2, New Bern, Mrs. Harry Brinkley of Snow Hill and Mrs. Warren Richardson of Dover; four sons, Norman of Baltimore, Md., Henry of Route 1, Dover; Jack of Millersville, Md., and J. B. (Jack) Bland, Jr., of Route 1, Dover; a half-sister, Miss Eleanor Brown of Norfolk, Va.; two half-brothers, Rocky and Leonard Brown of Dover; 25 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren."
