John Daniel B Sutton

Per Kinston Free Press dated Sept. 29, 1922: John D. Sutton was shot
and killed "Friday night just after dark on the Pink Hill Hwy, a short distance
beyond the Caswell Street Bridge when a Negro named Jim Miller, alleged
runner for whiskey stills, shot and killed John Sutton, a well-known and
respected farmer, who resides on the Whittington Road, several miles from
the city.

Sutton had been informed by his father over the phone that corn and hay
was being stolen from his farm. With his cousin, Arthur Sutton, he investigated
and found the thieves had gone. They followed in a car, accosted the driver of a
hay-covered wagon who turned out to be Jim Miller...Sutton got aboard the
wagon with the driver and said: "You drive on into town, Miller. I am going to
turn you over to the police." At the same time he told Archie Sutton, who was
in the car, to drive to Kinston and have the police meet them...four quick reports
from a revolver. More profanity and a thud were heard. Sutton had been mortally
wounded and pushed from the wagon...Jim Miller whipped up his horse and at
the same time a wagon containing Shade Aldridge and his brother and a car
driven by John Collins drove up...In the meantime Mr. Savage came from his
house and endeavored to render first aid to the dying man...."
