KINSTON - Russell Lewis Baker, 87, of 903 Wallace Lane, died Friday, July 18, 2008. 
He was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Bowker. 
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Marie A. Cliver Baker of the home; his daughter, 
Clarisse Glass and husband John, of Springfield, Mo.; his sons, Steve M. Baker and 
wife Judith, of Kinston, Ronald Allen Bowker and wife Gayle, of Cedar Creek, Texas, 
Howard Bowker and friend Shirley, of Delaware, Donald Paul Bowker and wife Debbie, 
of Kentucky; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

PINK HILL - Paul Bryant, 84, of 6359 Potters Hill Road, died Monday, July 14, 2008, 
at Britthaven of Kinston. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, July 18 at New Salem 
Free Will Baptist Chapel with Elder Arthur Lofton officiating. Burial will follow in Oak 
Ridge Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Yvonne Outlaw Bryant of the home; 
sons Clifton Bryant of Deep Run, Terance Bryant of the home; brothers Clarence Bryant, 
and Charles Bryant, both of Baltimore, Md.; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. 
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, July 17 at Loftin Funeral Home, and one 
hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

Burkette, Clarence "Tincy" 

KINSTON - Clarence "Tincy" Burkette, 97, of Kinston passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2008. 
Born in Jones County on December 18, 1910, he was the son of the late Clarence H. and 
Mittie Burkette. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Etta 
Humphrey. Mr. Burkette was a life-long farmer and will be remembered as a special 
Daddy and Granddaddy whom we all loved dearly and will be missed by all of us. 
Survivors include his daughters, Maude Turner, Marie Lewis and husband Donald, and 
Margaret Turner and hus-band Bobby, all of Kinston, Mittie Pike and husband Leslie, 
of Trenton, Jean Taylor and husband Glenn, of Jacksonville, Sadie Davis of Oregon, and 
Faye Diaz of Savannah, GA.; sons, Wesley Burkette and wife Elizabeth, Willie Burkette 
and wife Sally, all of Kinston, and Floyd Burkette of Garner; 29 grandchildren; 49 
great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends
 from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008, at Howard-Carter Funeral Home and other times 
at the home of his daughter, Marie Lewis, 1667 Hill Farm Road, Kinston. Funeral services 
will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 18, 2008, at the Funeral Home with the Reverends 
James Burkette and George Pike officiat-ing. Graveside services will follow the service 
at Westview Cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. West,

KINSTON - "The Man Behind the Vision" Bishop Landon "Odell" Burney, age 68, of 
Kinston, N.C. died on Tuesday, July 15, 2008, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. Funeral 
services will be held at noon, Saturday, July 19, 2008, at United Gospel Outreach 
Church with Bishop James E. Smallwood officiating. Burial services will be held at 
10 a.m. Monday, July 21, 2008, at Coastal Carolina Veteran's Cemetery. Odell 
served two branches of the Armed Forces, the Army and Navy. Odell's love for God 
began as a member of Quaker House Dis-ciples of Christ Church, Jones County. 
He was called into the ministry and ordained in 1973, where he served as 
Co-Evangelist of the Revival Time Church of Deliverance, Hartford, Conn. On March 
19, 2000, God granted Minister Landon Odell Burney's desire, as he opened Family 
Worship Center, "Ministry of Restoration." He is predeceased by his brother Johnson 
"Nash" Burney Jr. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 45 years, Roser 
Lawson Burney, of the home; one daughter, Bonita Burney Simmons (Eric) of New 
Bern, N.C.; one son, Larry Lawson (Thelma); seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; 
five sisters, Gloria Montgomery (Willie), Minnie Murrell, Lydia Faye Riley, Barbara Ann 
Burney all of Hartford, Conn. and Debris Savage of Kinston, N.C.; two brothers, Larry 
Burney of Hartford, Conn. and Keith Burney (Lavonne) of Wethersfield, Conn.

Chase, Rudy Gene 

SNOW HILL - Rudy Gene Chase, 65, of 501 Gray's Mill Road, died Tuesday, July 15, 2008, 
at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Rudy was born in Greene County to the late Floyd and 
Bertha Mae Sauls Chase. He was preceded in death by a son, Rudy Gene Chase, Jr.; 
and a step-son, Robert Alex Hill. Rudy worked as a carpenter by trade and was a 
member of Mount Calvary Free Will Baptist Church, Hookerton. He enjoyed fishing and 
gardening. At Rudy's request no public service will be held and a private burial will take 
place at a later date. Rudy is survived by his wife, Aldine Pittman Chase; two sons, 
Glenn Carson Chase and Bobby Ray Chase, both of Snow Hill; two step-sons, Al Hill 
of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Alton Hill of Palm Coast, Fla.; brother, Bronnie Chase of 
Snow Hill; three sisters, Elva Phillips, Diane Harrison and Evelyn Brann, all of Snow 
Hill; four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. Rudy's family would like to express

residence and went to be with the Lord Monday, July 14, 2008. Bill was a member of 
Wintergreen O.F.W.B. Church and loved hunting, fishing and farming. Funeral services 
will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 17, 2008, at Wintergreen O.F.W.B. Church with 
the Rev. Neal Cox officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. He was preceded 
in death by his parents, David and Esther Cox; and his brothers, Horace and Gene Cox.

DOVER - James Randall Creel, Sr. 68, of 430 West Kornegay Street, died Wednesday, 
July 16, 2008, at his home. He was a business owner and operator for over 48 years. 
He was a born entrepreneur beginning his business ownership and operations at age 
20. His busi-nesses included Creel's Service Center, J.R. Creel Equipment Company, 
his fishing vessel, "Dolphin One," and he was a labor contractor until his death working 
much with Frit Car Inc. Mr. Creel served as the Mayor of Dover for three terms and 
maintained a keen interest in national and local political affairs until his last days. He 
attended Dover United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, 
Harvey and Etta Braxton Creel; and two brothers, Harvey Creel, Jr. and Robert Creel. 
The family will receive friends from 1-2:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2008, at Westminster 
United Methodist Church in Kinston. The funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. with 
the Reverend Leland Heath and the Reverend Joseph Parker officiating. Burial will follow 
in Westview Cemetery in Kinston. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Margaret

SMYRNA, Ga. - Mrs. Ila Quinn (Martin) Fox passed away Friday July 18, 2008. 
A native of La Grange, N.C. and former resident of Clearwater, FL, Mrs. Fox had 
been a resident of Smyrna for 42 years. 
She was a member of Mt. Paran Church of God and Trinity Fellowship Church. 
She worked part time for Rich's department store for 24 years. 
She did extensive traveling over many years going to many countries. Mrs. Fox 
also had exchange students come from other countries to live with her and they 
became members of her family. 
She is survived by her husband Robert Fox of Smyrna and Daughter Pam Martin 
of Smyrna. She is also survived by Brothers and Sisters in law Ernest and Vernell 
Quinn of Goldsboro, N.C. and Doug and Kay Quinn of Charlotte, N.C.; several 
nieces and nephews and her loving and loyal pets JoJo, Spice Girl, Spencer, 
Cami "Black Girl" and Chelsea. 
Funeral service will be held 11:00 A.M. Monday July 21, 2008 from the chapel 
of Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna with the Revs. Richard Hemphill and 
Don Wood officiating. Interment will be in Georgia Memorial Park Cemetery. 
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. Sunday July 20, 2008 at 
the funeral home.

Howard, Emma "Caroline" 


KINSTON - Emma "Caroline" Howard, age 15 months, of 1098 John Green Smith 
Road, was born on April 21, 2007, and got her angel wings at 2:15 p.m. on July 17, 
2008, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. 
She spent 119 consecutive days in the hospital coura-geously battling brain cancer. 
She was in her mother's arms next to her daddy and her grandparents when Jesus 
came to take her home. 
She was an inspiration to all who knew her and to those who only knew of her story. 
She will forever be remembered for her tremendous strength and unwavering 
determination, even in the darkest storm. Her smile and her tiny hands playing 
pat-a-cake are forever imprinted in the hearts of many. She walks with God now 
and is surely the most beautiful angel that Heaven will ever see. 
Caroline is preceded in death by her great-grandparents, Rachel King Johnson, 
and husband Frank, Cecil King, Oscar Godwin, Jr., James "Bud" White-hurst, 
Rodney and Lucille Flowers, Ralph and Mabelle Howard, and great-uncle, Curtis 
Godwin. 
She is survived by her parents, Matthew and Michelle King Howard; brothers, 
Jameson "JJ" Taylor King and Jordan "Beetle" Scott Howard of the home; 
grandparents, Donald and Emmie King of Deep Run, Linda Howard of Kinston, and 
Dennis Howard of Pink Hill; great-grandmother, Louise Whitehurst of Kinston; aunts 
and uncles, Melissa Howard Lambert and husband Kevin, of Pink Hill, Kelly Howard 
of Kinston, Daniel Howard and wife Misty, of Pink Hill, and Michael Howard of Kinston. 
She will also be especially missed by great-aunts and great-uncles, Dell Howard

She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her sons, Jim Cole and John 
Cole.

will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday from Oakridge Memorial Park in Pink Hill. 
Survivors include her daughters, Florence Mae Jones of Chesapeake, Va., Doris Marie

SEVEN SPRINGS - Russell "Rusty" Lynn Kennedy, 51, of 835 Broadhurst Road, 
Seven Springs, died Monday evening at Wayne Memorial Hospital. Born in Lenoir

Heights Road, went to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Thursday, July 17, 2008. 
Mrs. Smith was born in the Jenny Lind Community of Lenoir County on February 
5, 1920, to the late Preston Nunn Sutton and Lou Pearl Anderson Sutton. She 
was married to the late William Andrew Smith. Funeral services will be held at

LA GRANGE — Rev. Allen James Ball, 86, of La Grange, entered into 
Heaven, Thursday, July 10, 2008. 
Rev. Ball was born in Duplin County to the late David James Ball, Sr. and 
Blanche Edwards Ball. He was preceded in death by a great-grandson, 
Joshua Bradley Carter; sister, Nannie Mae Ball; and two brothers, D.J. 
Ball and B.C. Ball. 
Rev. Ball served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a 
country music disc-jockey for many years. He worked with WHED, 
WITN, WOOW and WEEW, as well as serving as emcee for Jay Ball's 
Gospel Favorites on WITN-TV in Washington, N.C. 
Rev. Ball was an ordained minister in the Church of God where most of 
his ministry was spent evangelizing. He pastored the Angier Church of 
God for a brief period and started the Deep Run Church of God. Rev. Ball 
was a member of La Grange Church of God and was an accomplished 
guitarist/song writer. 
A service of remembrance will be held Sunday, July 13, 2008, at 5 p.m. 
from La Grange Church Of God. Committal services will be held Monday 
at 11 a.m. from Pinelawn Memorial Park. 
Rev. Ball is survived by his wife of 61 years, Frances Powell Ball; two sons,

Dail, Ida Gay Williams 

KINSTON - Ida Gay Williams Dail, 83, of Kinston, passed away at home on 
Saturday, July 19, 2008, surrounded by her loving family and friends. 
Ida Gay was born in Lenoir County, November 23, 1924, to the late David and 
Eunice A. Williams. She was a graduate of Moss Hill High School and also 
attended East Carolina College where she majored in home economics. 
She served her community in various roles including 4-H leader,    American 
Heart Association Fundraiser and Precinct Chairman with the Lenoir County 
Board of Elections. Ida Gay was an active member of Woodington United 
Methodist Church where she held various positions such as MYF Leader, 
board member and president of the United Methodist Women. 
She worked alongside her husband for many years in the grocery business. 
Her life's passion was her family, cooking, gardening and making beautiful 
flower arrangements and she shared these talents with many. 
Survivors left to cherish her memory include her husband of 62 years; Harold L. 
Dail, a son, H. Lynn Dail and wife, Audrey of Durham; a daughter, Theresa D. 
Edmondson and husband, Tommy of Kinston; two grandchildren, Kayla E. 
Brewer and husband Kevin of Vermont and Layton Edmondson of Kinston; a 
great grandchild, Zachary L. Brewer of Vermont. 
Additionally, she is survived by three sisters-in-law, Jo Williams of Kinston, 
Sue Alexander and husband, J. C. of Franklinton, and Grace Smith and 
husband, William K. of Raleigh, NC and several very special nieces and 
nephews. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, David R. and Eunice A. Williams; 
brothers, H. Ray Williams, James A. Williams, and David R. Williams, Jr. ; 
brothers-in-law, Elmer Dail and Ben Dail; sisters-in-law, Edith Dail, Charlotte 
Dail, and Esther Williams.

Martin, Deena Carol (Carraway) 

GREENVILLE - Deena Carol Carraway Martin, 43, of Greenville, N.C., was born 
April 27, 1965, to loving parents of Maury. Following a season of illness, she 
passed away peacefully, Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Pitt County Memorial 
Hospital. She will be remembered as a wonderful wife, daughter, sister, aunt, 
co-worker, pet owner and friend. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m. 
Friday, July 25, at the Greenville First Pentecostal Holiness Church, located 
at the corner of Plaza Blvd. and Evans St., officiated by her pastor, the Rev. 
Paul Brafford. Burial will follow in the Snow Hill Cemetery. Deena lived her 
early life in the Maury community of Greene County, and had made her home
 in Greenville for the past 18 years. She developed a passion for wildlife at an 
early age, and throughout her life enjoyed gardening, photographing nature, 
and caring for all God's creatures. She attended college at East Carolina 
University and later obtained degrees from Pitt Community and Mount Olive 
Colleges. She was dedicated to her career as a Cardiac Sonographer at Pitt 
County Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the Greenville First 
Pentecostal Holiness Church. Deena enjoyed beach music, NASCAR, sharp 
shooting, dancing, and travel. She is survived by her husband, Tim Martin; 
mother and step-father, Carolyn and Vernon Batten of Kinston; father, William 
Carraway of Maury; grandmother, Carrie Cash of Kinston; sisters, Heather 
Hughes of Raleigh and Holly Warren and husband Tom, of Durham; step-sister, 
Ann Murphy and husband Andy, of New Bern; two nephews, Zack and Amir; 
and two nieces, Diana and Andrea. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. 
Thursday at Wilkerson Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Vaughn, Tucie P.

AHOSKIE - Tucie Elizabeth Phelps Vaughn, 97, of the 500 block of Memorial Drive, 
died Monday, July 21, 2008, at Roanoke Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. Mrs. Vaughn 
was born in Colerain, N.C. on October 11, 1911, in the home of her grandparents, 
J. Dorsey Evans and Arthusa "Tucie" Godwin Evans. She moved to Ahoskie with 
her parents, R.E.L. and Maude Evans Phelps in 1912 and was baptized at Stoney 
Creek into the Ahoskie Baptist Church in 1917. Tucie was a 1928 graduate of 
Ahoskie High School, attended Meredith College from 1928 to 1931 and Duke 
University from 1931 to 1932. In 1932, she married Craig Brette Vaughn of Ahoskie 
and with him co-founded Ahoskie Fish and Produce in 1935, the Toma-hawk 
Restaurant in 1954, and Tomahawk Motel in 1959. Mrs. Vaughn was dedicated to 
love of family and friends, to her church and to her town. Left to cherish her memory 
is her son, Sammy Vaughn and wife Colleen, of Nags Head, N.C.; her daughter, 
Nita Day Michels of Kinston, N.C.; granddaughters, Elizabeth Day Irby of Atlanta, 
Ga., Rebecca Day Smithers of Kinston, and Jessica Vaughn Rudd of Kill Devil Hills;
 a great-granddaughter, Kendal Rudd of Kill Devil Hills; special caretaker, Gracie 
Twine and longtime employee and friend, Cleveland Watson. A graveside service 
will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 24, 2008, at Highland Memorial 
Gardens. The family will receive friends at Garrett Funeral Home-Ashley Chapel,

SHELBY - Kenneth Marshall Brinkley, 72, of 232 S. Fork Dr., died Saturday, July
26, 2008, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. Brinkley was born in Kinston, 
Lenoir Co., NC. Brinley, who served in Vietnam in the U.S. Army Airborne, was 
a Retired Electrician after 37 years with General Motors Corp. in Flint Michigan.

Sunday school Class. Brinkley was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth 
William and Alma Wise Brinkley. He is survived by his son, William Roy Brinkley

Michigan; sisters, Lillian B. Collins and husband Dr. Warren F. Collins and Pat

Loftin, Ethel Barrow 

KINSTON - Mrs. Loftin, 86, formerly of Kinston, died Saturday, July 26, 2008, in 
Shelby, NC. Born June 20, 1922, in Greene County, NC, to the late Martin Luther 
Barrow, Sr. and the late Vada Briley Barrow, she graduated as an RN from Lenoir 
Memorial School of Nursing in Kinston in 1943. She was a member of Queen 
Street United Methodist Church. Mrs. Loftin's life spoke for itself through her 
Christian love and service in her community and her church, and in her love and 
concern for her family. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Loftin was preceded in 
death by her husband, Hardy Pittman Loftin, a daughter, Susan Elizabeth Loftin, 
and two brothers, Charles Barrow and John Allen Barrow. Survivors are: sister, 
Mary Barrow Hill; brother, Martin Luther Barrow, Jr. and wife Barbara; sister-in-law 
Margaret Barrow; son, Ben Loftin; daughter, Ann Williams; grandson Nick Williams;

McAllister, Johnie Edwards 

WAKE FOREST - Johnie Edwards McAllister was born on April 24, 1920 in Kinston, 
North Carolina to the late John R. and Celia H. Edwards and departed this life on 
July 23, 2008 at Wake Medical Center, Raleigh, North Carolina. Johnie married 
her beloved husband, Walter A. McAllister on April 28, 1939. From that union, 
they were blessed with two loving daughters: Desretta McAllister Harper and
LaVerne E. McAllister. Johnie graduated from Adkin High School, Kinston North 
Carolina in 1937, where she was active in the glee club, a member of the basketball 
team, and the salutatorian of her graduating class. As a devoted mother, Johnie 
was the president of the PTA and a member of the Band Booster Club. She was 
a chartered member of Emmanuel Hill Memorial Free Will Baptist Church. Johnie
 was a hair stylist at the Ideal Beauty Salon and a Residence Hall Supervisor at 
Dobbs School for Girls, both in Kinston, North Carolina. The couple migrated to 
rvington, New Jersey, where Johnie continued her education at Essex Community 
College and became a LPN. In Irving-ton she attended Peaceful Zion Baptist Church, 
was a member of the North Carolina Club and the Friendship Club. Before retirement, 
she enjoyed traveling with her husband in the USA and the Caribbean. After retiring 
from Beth Israel Hospital, Newark, New Jersey, Johnie returned to her beloved North 
Carolina. Johnie Edwards McAllister is survived by her husband of 69 years, Walter
 A. McAllister, two devoted daughters, Dr. Desretta McAllister Harper (Robert
 "Stonewall" Jackson), Wake Forest, NC and Ms. LaVerne E. McAllister, Upper 
Marlboro, MD; a sister, Lisbeth Ellen E. Berry, Kinston, NC; one special niece, 
Treda S. Berry, Charlotte, NC; one great niece, Ingrid A. Shepherd, Raleigh, NC; 
and a host of other relatives and friends. The memorial service will be held Tuesday,

Whaley, Lyda H. 

PINK HILL - Lyda H. Whaley, 88, died Friday, July 25, 2008, from Alzheimer's 
disease at the Wilson Medical Center. She was a devoted long time member of 
Christian Chapel FWB Church. She was a Registered Nurse for over forty years. 
Surviving are, her children, Law-rence H. Weber III, Robert Paul Weber, Luther 
James Whaley Jr., Linda Lou Whaley Lanier; her daughter-in-law, Mary Weber 
Canady; her sister-in-law, Maxine Gales Howard; seven grandchildren; and nine

McCoy III, Samuel Edward "Eddy" 

GRIFTON - Samuel Edward (Eddy) McCoy, III, 67, of Hugo passed away July 26, 
2008 at home following a long, courageous battle with cancer. Eddy was born May 
2, 1941 to the late Sam and Bessie McCoy of Hugo. In addition to his parents, 
he was preceded in death by his brother; Billy Ray McCoy, and sister; Catherine 
Jackson Brown. He was a long time farmer and member of Hugo FWB Church. He 
will be remembered as a loving husband and a spe-cial father, grandfather, brother 
and uncle. He was a good friend to the community and to all who knew him. 
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Kay Shepherd McCoy of the home. Children, 
Sammy Ray and wife Tonka H. McCoy of Hugo; Kelly and wife Carrie T. McCoy of 
Louisville, Kentucky; Melissa McCoy and Brad Ward of Hugo; and "adopted" 
daughter Missy Mills of Kinston. Grandchildren, Samantha, Jacob, and Kaycen 
McCoy of Hugo; brother, Paul and wife Ginette McCoy of Columbus, Ohio, and 
sister, Margaret Muegge of Burlington. Mother-in-law, Delma Shepherd of the 
home, sister-in-law, Brenda Shepherd of Kinston and many special nieces and 
nephews. The family wishes to express a heartfelt thanks to the local community 
and Hugo FWB Church for their constant love and support. They would also like 
to express special gratitude to Dr. Walter Quan of ECU, who was a true physician; 
he administered both medical and emotional support throughout Eddy's illness.

KINSTON - Julia Kate "Granny" Waters Southerland 95 1/2, of 1506 W. 
Washington Ave. went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior on July 27, 
2008. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother 
and lived her life with grace. She loved her Lord first and then loved everyone 
she met. She was known to all as "Granny". She was faithful to her church and

Evelyn Southerland, two grandchildren Michael Parrish and Patti Johnson,

Howard, Mable Brown 

TRENTON- Mable Brown Howard, 93, of Trenton, passed away on Saturday, July 
26, 2008. 
Mrs. Howard was born in Lenoir County on April 8, 1915, to the late George 
Washington and Vertie Wiley Brown. In addition to her parents, she was preceded 
in death by her husbands, Bill Alphin and Pompey Theodore Howard; son, Alton 
Alphin; and step-sons, Ralph J. Howard and Herman Howard. She was a Cafeteria 
Worker with the Jones County Schools and a homemaker. 
Survivors include daughters, Etta H. Dixon and husband Willis, of Snow Hill, Elaine 
Sanders of Parkersburg, West Virginia; sons, Aarone Howard and wife Helen, and 
Oscar Howard, Sr. and wife Vicki, all of Kinston, Paul Howard and wife Peggy, of 
Clarksville, Tenn., and Leslie Howard of the home; numerous grandchildren and 
great-grandchildren; a special friend, Kay Lingefelt, and many loving neighbors and 
friends. 
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at Howard-Carter

Chase, Howard L. 

SNOW HILL - Mr. Howard Loyd Chase, 62, passed away Tuesday morning, 
July 29, 2008, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. 
Howard was a native of Greene County born March 10, 1946, the son of the late 
Loyd Wayne Chase and Mildred Holt Chase. He was a life long resident of the 
Shine Community and avid outdoorsman with a great love for hunting and fishing. 
Prior to retirement, he had farmed and spent many years in the glass construction 
industry. Howard's memory will be cherished as a loving husband, "Daddy" and 
"PaPa". 
Funeral Services will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson 
Funeral Service with the Reverend Cliff Harvell and the Reverend Larry Turlington 
officiating. Committal services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, August 1, at the Snow 
Hill Cemetery. 
Howard is survived by his wife, Helen Smith Chase of the home; daughter, Tracey 
Lynn Chase-Wolf of La Grange; a son, Stacey Howard Chase and wife Misty, of 
Snow Hill; his mother, Mildred Chase Stroud of Snow Hill; a brother, Dennis Ray 
Chase and wife Peggy, of Snow Hill; grandchildren, Austin Tyler Chase and special 
friend, Christan Levinson, Ashleigh Elizabeth Chase and special friend, James 
"Fuzzy" Lancaster, Kelli Brianne Chase, and Emma Rose Chase; special niece,

Kelley, Joseph Raeford 

KINSTON - Joseph Raeford Kelley, 93, of Kinston passed away on July 29, 2008. 
He was born in Duplin County on July 16, 1915, to the late Joseph Emerson and 
Elizabeth Wilson Kelley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 
his first wife, Rosalie Ann Moody Kelley; son, Bobby Kelley; six brothers, one 
sister and one granddaughter, Bonita. 
Mr. Kelley was an Electrician with Commercial Wiring; a member of New Life 
Community Church; a member of Local #495 Union; member of local VFW Post 
2771 and American Legion Post 43. 
Survivors include his wife, Helen Outland Kelley of the home; daughters, Carol 
Cauley and Maria Lee, both of Kinston, Mary Smith of McCalla, Ala.; eight 
grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; step-daughters, Linda Daughety of Wilson, 
and Carol Tindal of Kinston. 
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 30, 2008, at Howard-Carter 
Funeral Home with the Reverends David Tripp and Ashley Summerlin officiating.

Gray, Bernice Humphrey 
  
KINSTON - Bernice Humphrey Gray, was called home to her Lord and 
Savior on July 29, 2008. 
She was born in Lenoir County to Oscar and Emma Humphrey on 
September 28, 1924. She was a loyal and active member of her community 
and Southwest Christian Church, where she was loved by all. She was 
devoted to her family and friends giving unconditionally of love, kindness, 
and generosity. 
She loved spending time in her vegetable and flower garden during the summer 
and quilting with friends during the winter. She created wonderful quilts for her 
church, family and community. She was a wonderful wife and mother. 
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 41 years, Albert Lester 
Gray; her mother, Emma Smith Humphrey; her father, Oscar Humphrey, Sr.; 
brothers Alfred, Jake and wife Marie, Clarence and wife Ina Mae Humphrey, all of 
Deep Run; brother-in-law Felix and wife Verna Gray; sister-in-law Verna-Jack Gray 
of Deep Run; sister-in-law Ethel and husband Robert Casey, of Kinston and 
extended family member Greg Johnson of Pink Hill. 
Survivors include a son Alan Randall Gray, of the home; a daughter, Alice Delana 
Gray and special friend Bracey Harrell, of Kinston; her sisters, Evelyne H. Stroud, 
Annie Lee H. Smith, Ethel (Sweetie) H. Lee, of Deep Run and Marjorie H. Hill of 
New Bern; and brothers, John L. Humphrey, Carlyle Humphrey and wife Vonnie 
Rea, Ralph Humphrey and wife Gwen; sister-in-law Dorothy Humphrey; brother-in-law 
Jasper Gray and wife Stella, sister-in-law Clara Daughety; numerous nieces and
