LA GRANGE ? William Aldridge "Billy" Hardy Jr., 71, of 4331 Ben Dail Rd., died Saturday, 
May 31, 2008. Mr. Hardy was born in Greene County to the late William Aldridge Hardy Sr. 
and Ellen Bruce Jones Hardy. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sylvia Ann 
Davenport Hardy. Billy was a farmer and the longtime owner/operator of W.A. Hardy Jr. & 
Sons Store. Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 1, 2008, at 5 p.m. from Wheat 
Swamp Christian Church with Pastor Lawrence Taylor officiating. Interment will be Monday 
at 11 a.m. from Rainbow United Methodist Church Cemetery. 
Billy is survived by his wife, Ann Rouse Hardy; two sons, William Aldridge Hardy III and wife 
Rose of La Grange, and Benjamin Vance "Bennie" Hardy and wife Laura of La Grange; 
stepson Levy Suggs Jr. of Snow Hill; four grandchildren, Amanda, Will, Jacob and Joshua; 
sister Ellen Bruce Hardy Parker and husband Eddie of Snow Hill; his mother-in-law by his

2008. Janet was born in Lenoir County to the late Robert E. Noble and Vivian Sutton Noble. 
She was a member of Neuse Baptist Church, where she taught the Access Sunday School 
Class. Janet was working as a receptionist with Alliance One International and had a great 
love of gardening. A service of remembrance will be held Monday, June 2, 2008, at 7 p.m.

11 a.m. from Westview Cemetery. Janet is survived by two sisters, Gail Hardison and

May 29, 2008, at Kitty Askins in Goldsboro. Danny worked 18 years with Hampton 
Industries and, until his sickness, with Kinston Country Club. He was preceded in death
 by his parents, Clyde and Lou Gurganus White; his sister and brother-in-law, Wallace 
and Pauline White Shotwell; and a brother, Roland E. "Chuggy" White. The family will 
receive friends from 1:30 until 2:00 p.m. on Monday, June 2, 2008, at Garner Funeral 
Home, and other times at his home. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 p.m. with 
Captain Michael Rodgers and Major Milton Wood officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood

Jernigan, Robert Eugene 

KINSTON - Robert Eugene "Bobby" Jernigan, 75, of 2847 Abby Court Kinston, passed 
away on Sunday, June 1, 2008 at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. He was a Korean War 
veteran and a member of St. John's Lodge, #4. Bobby attended Glen Raven Church 
and was retired from the Raleigh News & Observer as a District Sales Manager. Bobby 
was preceded in death by his parents, Jennings and Effie Jernigan. Survivors include his 
wife, Civel Rose Edwards Jernigan; daughter Lorelle Walker, husband Eddie Ray and 
their children, Chason Walker, Aaron Walker, wife Wendy and their children, Hunter and 
Gabby; Brittany Walker and her daughter Ava Grace; daughter Scarlett Kennedy, husband 
Bruce and their son Forrest; daughter Tracy Jernigan and special friend Greg Chiello and

Naomi LaRoque 
KINSTON ? Naomi "Nikki" Webb LaRoque, age 81, died Saturday, May 31, 2008, at 
Lenoir Memorial Hospital. She was born August 11, 1926, in Rockingham, North 
Carolina, to the late George Henderson Webb and Ruth Phoenix Webb. She graduated 
from Greensboro High School and attended the one year Commercial Course at Women's 
College University of North Carolina (UNC-G). She lived in Kinston since February 1, 1951. 
A lifelong Presby-terian, she was an ordained Deacon and Elder at First Presbyterian 
Church of Kinston and served on a variety of committees. She was also privileged to serve 
on several Albemarle Presbytery committees as well as one term as Moderator. She was 
a member of the Synod of North Carolina Council and was a Commissioner to the General 
Assembly of the Presbyterian Church U.S. in 1974. She was awarded the Presbyterian 
Women's Life Membership. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, 
2008, at First Presbyterian Church of Kinston with the Rev. Mary Gale officiating. A private 
burial will be held at Ma-plewood Cemetery. She was predeceased by her husband of 48 
years Walter D. LaRoque III. Survivors include four sons, Walter D. LaRoque IV and wife 
Holly Sykes, George W. La-Roque and wife Barbara Allen, Stephen A. LaRoque and wife 
Susan Royce, all of Kinston, and Mark H. LaRoque and wife Roseann Turner of Morehead 
City, N.C.; five grandsons, Walter D. LaRoque V and wife Jamie Newton of Rosedale, 
Maryland, George W. LaRoque II and John-Luke P. LaRoque, both of Kinston, N.C., and 
Benjamin H. LaRoque and Eric T. LaRoque of Morehead City, N.C.; one great-grandson 
Alexander P. LaRoque of Rosedale, Maryland; brother George H. Webb and wife Ernestine 
and sister-in-law Carolyn M. La-Roque all of Kinston. The family will receive friends at the

June 2, 2008. Mrs. Medlin was born in Dillon County, S.C. on September 12, 1937, to 
the late Perry Cooke and Mae Horne Cooke Cook. In addition to her parents, she is 
preceded in death by her step-father, Doug Cook. She was a member of Sandy Bottom

Morris, Anna Belle 

SNOW HILL - Mrs. Anna Belle Hathaway Morris, 89, passed away Tuesday, June 3, 2008. 
A native of Pitt County, she was born April 2, 1919, the daughter of William A. and Annie 
Walston Hathaway. Mrs. Morris actively managed her farms and her dedication to agriculture 
aided in her service and appointments to the USDA National Advisory Committee and the 
USDA Flue Cured Tobacco Committee. For 25 years she served as a member of the Board 
of Directors of Pitt & Greene Electric Corporation and was an instrumental benefac-tor to the 
establishment of the Fort Run Fire Department. She also served as the Secre-tary/Treasurer 
for the Snow Hill Chapter of the NC Grange for many years. Mrs. Morris was a member of 
Harrell's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church where she was active in the church ministries and 
was a member of the choir. Through her FWB denomination she was very supportive of Mount 
Olive College and faithfully contributed as a Bridge Builder to aid in the college's mission of 
Christian education. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Fri-day, June 6, at the chapel of 
Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service with the Reverend Alvin Keener and Reverend Chuck Owens 
officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Greenville, NC. Mrs. Morris 
was preceded in death by three loving husbands, Jack T. Griffin, Frank Pierce and Rudolph 
Marshburn; a daughter, Annette Griffin Price; and a son-in-law, Curtis R. Daniels. Her surviving 
family includes her children, Donna Faye Griffin Lane of Wilmington, Lucille Griffin Daniels of 
Snow Hill, Otis Griffin and wife Julia, of Snow Hill, Wayne Griffin and wife Julie, of Oregon, Gail 
Griffin Johnson and husband Buster, of Walstonburg, and Teresa Pierce Stocks and husband 
Sammy, of Simpson; a son-in-law, Bobby G. Price of Winterville; 13 grandchildren, 23 
great-grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends on

Taylor, Henry R. 

PINK HILL - Henry Ross "Bucky" Taylor, 84, of 5081 Watering Pond Road, died 
Wednesday, June 4, 2008, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. He was preceded in death 
by his wife, Mary Louise Hennessey Taylor. Mr. Taylor retired from the United States 
Navy serving from 1942 to 1965. A service of remembrance will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, 
June 6, 2008, from Rouse Funeral Home. Mr. Taylor is survived by four children, Janet 
Hill of Pink Hill, Michael Taylor of Wake Forest, Ray Smith of Wilmington and David 
Taylor of Wilmington; eight brothers and sisters, Bruton Taylor of California, Jean Rogers

Butts, John Franklin "Shorty" 

KINSTON - John Franklin "Shorty" Butts, 76, of Kinston passed away Wednesday, 
June 4, 2008. Mr. Butts was born in Greene County on February 14, 1932, to the late 
Walter and Josephine Ham Butts. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by 
brothers, Elton Butts and Willie Arthur Butts; sister, Fannie Lee Butts Kearney; and 
step-daughter, Barbie Virginia Marshburn. Shorty was a commercial plumber with 
Chestnut Plumbing. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather; 
loved NASCAR, especially his favorite drivers, Dale Earnhart and Dale, Jr. He enjoyed 
fishing and spending time with family and friends. Survivors include his wife of 22 years, 
Norma Marshburn Butts of the home; sons, John Franklin "Jr." Butts of Lucama, Hayden 
Butts and wife Kelli , Wayne Butts and wife Brenda, Eddie Butts and wife Donna, Dexter
 Butts and wife Robin, all of Florence, S.C.; step-children, Connie M. Barnette of Pink Hill,

Quinerly Jr., Josephus Plummer 

GRIFTON - Josephus Plummer Quinerly, Jr., 85, passed away peacefully in his Grifton 
home on June 3, 2008. Joe grew up on the Quinerly farm at Quinerly, east of Grifton. He 
received his Bachelor's Degree in Social Science at the age of 19 from Atlantic Christian 
College (now known as Barton College) in Wilson, N.C. and did post graduate work at 
Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. Immediately after college Joe worked for the Atlantic 
Coast Line Railroad Company in Emporia, Va. In 1944, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps 
and became aircraft qualified to fly the C-46, C-44, AT 10, PT23, and Piper. He was 
assigned to the Western Pacific Theater until 1946 in the campaigns in the Southern 
Philippines, Luzon, and Japan. After WWII, Joe continued his military service in the Air 
Force Reserves, retiring as a Major in 1982. Joe returned to Grifton after the war and was 
employed in his uncle's general merchandise store, H. P. Quinerly & Bro. For over 20 
years, Joe was also a rural mail carrier in Pitt, Lenoir, and Craven counties. In 1952, he 
began a 49 year career as a custom home builder, real estate developer, roofing contractor, 
and President of No. 1 Construction, developing the subdivisions of Meadow Green, Oakhaven, 
and Quinerly Acres. Additionally, he built many of the homes in Forest Acres, Pine Villa, the 
Pines, and in the Grifton Country Club subdivision in Pitt and Lenoir counties. In 1965, Joe 
brought the first fast food restaurant to the tiny town of Grifton, a franchised "Little Mint" drive 
in, moving the physical building from Greenville to Grifton. He also built the building which 
houses the Grifton Fire & Police Department. Joe was a Charter Member of the Grifton 
Country Club, former Chairman of the Board of the Grifton Christian Church, past President 
of Grifton Lion's Club, and a former Volunteer with the Grifton Volunteer Fire Department, 
and a member of Grifton VFW. Joe Quinerly loved to work, loved his farm, helping other 
people, and arguing politics. He especially loved his wife, Linda's cooking and flying "space 
available" from Cherry Point to eventually land at Scott Air Force Base to 
"hang out" with his daughter and her friends in St. Louis. He is survived by his loving wife of 
49 years, Linda Vann Quinerly of Grifton; and his devoted daughter, Kathy Vann Quinerly of 
St. Louis, Mo. A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 7, 2008, 
at the Ayden Cemetery in Ayden, NC. His wife and daughter will receive friends following the 
service at the home in Forest Acres, Grifton. In lieu of flowers, Linda and Kathy ask that 
contributions be made to the Grifton Rescue Squad, PO Box 412, Grifton, NC 28530. Funeral

Whitfield, William DeLeon "Billy" 

KINSTON - William DeLeon "Billy" Whitfield, 79, of Kinston, passed away on Thursday, 
June 5, 2008. Billy was born in Lenoir County on November 17, 1928, to the late Ike and 
Frances Whitfield. He was a life long farmer and a member of Holy Innocents Episcopal 
Church in Seven Springs. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, 
Sybil Suggs Whitfield; sisters, Marietta and Rachel Whitfield; brothers, Melvin, Floyd and 
Hubert Whitfield. Survivors include daughter, Susan W. Whitley and husband Dexter, of
 Kinston; son, Douglas D. Whitfield of Greenville; grandchildren, Caroline Nicole Whitley 
and Alison Sybil Whitley; sister, Addie Campbell Stroud of Kinston; sister-in-law, 
Marguerite Whitfield of Kinston; and special friend, Georgia Hardy. The family will receive 
friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Saturday, June 7, 2008, at Howard-Carter Funeral Home and other
