DEATH OF MRS. MARY RHODES
b. July 20,1853-died Dec. 31, 1921

On a visit in S.C. the death of Mary E.J. RHODES occurred at an early
hour Saturday. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Annie Rhodes
JONES, of Spartanburg, S.C.; to which place she had gone a short time
before Christmas for a visit. She failed to rally from an attack of
pleuro-pneumonia. Mrs. RHODES was born in Jones Co, N.C., 68 years ago.
Fifty two years ago she married Zacchaeus RHODES, whose death occurred
in 1911. Thirteen children were born, seven of whom survive, Mrs. W.J.
LANGSTON, Mrs. I.S. ROCHELLE, and Mrs. W.C. SUTTON of this city
(Kinston), Mrs. Emmett HASKINS of Norfolk, Va., Mrs. Clayton GRADY of
Deep Run; Mrs. Annie JONES of Spartanburg, S.C. and John F. RHODES of
New Bern, N.C. Mrs. RHODES was a woman of broad sympathies, of a quick
human understanding and a rare capacity for friendship, and these
qualities led her into relationships far-reaching in their influence.
With all the allegiances and graces of one devoted to her domestic
interests, she took a valued part in concerns of a wider nature. She
loved and labored for her church and well exemplified in her life the
principles of her faith. As a teacher in the Sunday School, a member of
the Mission Circle or in promoting by any other means the welfare of her
church, she put without reserve her best thought and effort into what
she undertook. She was an honored life member of the Woman's National
Missionary Association of the Universalist Church and was in helpful
touch with the leaders and enterprises of that organization. The funeral
will be held at the Universalist Church, Lenoir Ave & McLewean St.,
Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Mrs. Katherine B. HASKELL, Revs. Dwight
A. BALL, and Harry L. CANFIELD will each take part in the service.
