TRENTON - Ernestine Willis Brown, 77, of 103 Simmons St., died 
Thursday, May 1, 2008, at home. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. 
Wednesday, May 7, at St. Matthew AME Zion Church with Eldress 
Gwendolyn Haddock officiating. Burial will follow in Haiti Cemetery. 
Survivors include daughters Gwendolyn Brown of Trenton, Elaine 
Atkinson and Velma Roberts, both of Winston-Salem; sons Herbert 
Brown of Winston-Salem, Lawrence A. Brown of Chapel Hill, Eric 
Brown of Trenton, Harold J. Brown of the home; sister Edna Murrell

KINSTON - Moses O'Neil Burney, 76, of 2106 Cedar Lane, died Friday, 
May 2, 2008, at the VA Center in Fayetteville. The funeral will be held 
at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, at Christian Fellowship Center in the 
Browntown Community with Bishop Charles White officiating. Burial 
will follow in Pinelawn Memorial Park. Survivors include daughter 
Patricia A. Washington of Kinston; sons Moses Pitt and Richard 
Curtis Super, both of Kinston, Christopher J. Burney of Greensboro, 
Jeffrey Leon Super of Greenville; brother Theodore Burney of Trenton;

Carraway, Ruth Williams

KINSTON - Mrs. Ruth Williams Carraway, 83, passed away Tuesday, 
May 6, 2008. The funeral service will be conducted Friday at 1:30 p.m. 
in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. Bur-ial will follow in Pinewood 
Memorial Park. Mrs. Carraway was a graduate of Robersonville High 
School and retired from E. I. DuPont in Kinston. She was a member 
of Williamston First Pentecostal Holiness Church. Mrs. Carraway was 
preceded in death by her husband, Josh L. Carraway in 1998, and a 
son, Benny W. Carraway in 2000. She is survived by her grandchildren, 
Josh Carraway, of Atlantic Beach, N.C., Lisa C. Ruehle, of New York 
City, N.Y., and Chad Carraway, of Henderson, N.C.; four 
great-grandchildren; sister, Frances Davenport, of Williamston; 
brother, Ray Williams, of Grifton; and special nieces, Marsha Pace, 
of Williamston, and Ronda Rollins, of New Bern. The family will receive 
friends Thursday 7 to 9 p.m. at Wilkerson Funeral Home and at other 
times at the home of Frances Davenport in Williamston. Memorial

BEULAVILLE - Myra Southerland Johnson, 89, died Tuesday, May 
6, 2008, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice Care Center in Wilmington. 
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Satur-day, May 10, at the 
Community Funeral Home Chapel, Beulaville. Burial will follow at 
East Duplin Memorial Gardens. Survivors include daughters Beth 
Johnson Callaway of Chesa-peake, Va., Carolyn Johnson Weis of 
Beulaville and Francis Johnson Lewis of Apex; sons Dennis E. 
Johnson of Kelly and Fletcher Keith Johnson of Chinquapin; brother 
Jimmy L. Southerland of Chinquapin; 16 grandchildren; 17 
great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren. The family will

Koehler, Julia Whelski 

OLDSMOR, Fla. - Julia Whelski Koehler, 88, of Oldsmor, Fla., formerly of 
Kinston, passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2008. She was born February 3, 
1920, in Indianapolis, Ind., to the late Joseph and Mary Whelski. She is 
preceded in death by her husband, Sylvan "Sam" Koehler. Mrs. Koehler 
was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Kinston. Survivors include her 
daughters, Nancy Wormack of Morehead, Shirley Williams and husband 
Dennis, and Portia Watson and husband Steve, all of Florida, Debra Waters 
and husband Edward, of Kinston; sons, Sherman Koehler and wife Brenda, of 
Cape Carteret, the Rev. Robert Koehler and wife Ann, of Fredericksburg, Va.; 
13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. 
The family will receive visitors from 1-2 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2008, at Faith 
Lutheran Church. Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Ron 
Fletcher officiating. Interment will follow the service at Pinelawn Memorial Park.

KINSTON - Mary Kathleen Adkins Potter, 44, of Kinston, passed away 
on Tuesday, May 6, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband 
Mike Potter and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Adkins. Survivors 
include her daughters, Kristen Potter and Kaitlynn Potter of the home; 
her fi anc?ike Mozingo of Kinston. In addition to her daughters, survivors 
include her father, Roger Parker and wife Lou-Ella, of Virginia; brothers, 
John Adkins of Kinston, Bobby Adkins of Arapahoe, Eric Parker of 
Virginia; sisters, Angela Madren and family, and Amanda Gray and 
family of Virginia. Survivors also include Jean Thomas and husband 
Jerry, Patsy Gates and husband Horace, Lucille Hooker and husband 
Gene, Jimmy Potter and wife Carol, Henry Potter and Karen Byrd, all 
of Kinston, and Dinah Wilson and husband Doug of La Grange. A 
memorial service honoring the life of Kathy will be held at 7 p.m. Friday,

Thompson, Gregory Lee 

KINSTON - Gregory Lee Thompson, 49, of Kinston passed away 
on Tuesday, May 6, 2008. Greg was the son of Ernest and Vivian 
Teachey Thompson. He will be remembered as a loving husband, 
father, son and brother who enjoyed outdoor activities and spending
time with his family and friends. Preceding him in death are his 
paternal grandmother, Ireland Murphy; and maternal grandparents, 
Asa J. and Ruth Teachey. In addition to his parents, survivors include 
his wife of 13 years, Marla Klein Thompson of the home; daughter, 
Mandy Thompson Wade of Goldsboro; step-children, Amie Elizabeth 
Stucker and John Lee Stucker, III, both of Kinston and Jason Lee 
Smith of Athens, Tenn.; brother, Chris Thompson of Kinston; special 
aunts, Joan Deatherage and Pat Lumpton, both of Kinston; special 
nieces and nephew, Ashley Brooke Thompson, Christy N. Thompson, 
Tracey Whitley, Stacey Tilghman and Scott Tilghman; family friend,

Wade, Celia Hart

SNOW HILL - Mrs. Celia Hart Wade, 89, passed away Tuesday evening, May 
6, 2008, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. A native of Greene County, she was born 
February 6, 1919, the daughter of Raymond E. and Mary Gay Hart. Following 
graduation from the Snow Hill High School, she married her late husband, 
William Wayne Wade, and they resided in the Stantonsburg community for 
many years; following retirement they returned to Snow Hill. Mrs. Wade was 
a member of Harrell's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church where she had served 
as Church Clerk for 70 years and was also very active in the Ladies Auxiliary. 
Funeral Services will be held 3 p.m. Friday, May 9, at Harrell's Chapel FWB 
Church with the Reverend Alvin Keener officiating. Burial will immediately follow 
in the church cemetery. Mrs. Wade is survived by her children, Mary Wade 
Taylor of Goldsboro, Annie Wade Carter of Chesapeake, VA, Kay Wade 
Hudson of Raleigh, Camilla Wade Davis and Dwight S. Davis, both of Snow 
Hill; sisters, Valeria H. Smith of Snow Hill and Lucy H. Hill of Hookerton; 
brothers, Buren Hart of Snow Hill, Dewey Hart of Hookerton and Wayne Hart 
of FL; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. The family will receive

Jones, Kathleen D. 

NEVADA CITY, Calif. - Kathleen D. Jones, age 54, died at a local medical facility 
May 6, 2008, following a brief illness. Born on June 21, 1953, in Baton Rouge, 
Louisiana to William Ward Daniels and Mary Magdalen Dominguez Daniels. As 
a child, Kathleen's family traveled to North Carolina, Tennessee and Louisiana, 
and made many moves due to her father's work for DuPont. Kathleen attended 
high school in Kinston, North Carolina and later attended the University of North 
Carolina, Chapel Hill where she received her degree in Dental Hygiene. On 
October 19, 1974, she married James Herbert Jones Jr. in Kinston, North Carolina 
and they moved to Meadow Vista, California where Kathleen worked as bookkeeper 
and hygienist in her husband's dental office. In 1980 they relocated the dental office 
to Grass Valley and their home to Nevada City; she continued to work in her 
husband's dental office as the bookkeeper until her passing. Kathleen was a 
member of The Single Action Shooting Society #20630 and loved Cowboy Action 
Shooting in which she par-ticipated under an alias of Pay Back Princess. She 
was a gourmet cook and loved fine wines. Her husband James Jones Jr.; son 
James Kristopher Jones and his wife Michelle Jones; sister Rebecca Marks of 
Alen, Texas; brothers, Dr. William Daniels of Georgia and Douglas Daniels of 
North Carolina along with several nieces and nephews, survive Kathleen. Private

KINSTON - Minnie B. Rhem, 80, of 1514 Hyman Ave., died Wednesday, 
May 7, 2008, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. 
Wednesday, May 14, at Mills Funeral Home with the Rev. John Smith officiating. 
Burial will follow in Oak Hill Memorial Park. Survivors include husband Zeb Rhem 
of the home; daughters Annette Hawkins and Angela Rhem, both of Kinston,

Stout, John Michael 

KINSTON - John Michael Stout, 82, of 2102 Dallas Drive, died Sunday, May 
11, 2008, at his home. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was 
awarded the Bronze Star. He was owner/operator of JMS Associates/Erskines 
Jewelers and a member of the First Presby-terian Church. Mr. Stout was a 
member of the Creasy Proctor Shrine Lodge #679 in Fayette-ville. He was 
preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Love Stout. Graveside services with 
Military Honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, from 
Westview Cemetery with the Reverend Haywood Smith officiating. Survivors
 include his daughter, Lisa Stout Taylor and husband William, of Charlottesville, 
Va. and their son, Jonathan; his son, Mike Stout and wife Marcia, of Kinston 
and their children, Justin, Adam, Katie and Tyler. The family will receive friends
 from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Westminster United Methodist Church, 
and other times at the home of his son, 1305 Hardee Road. Garner Funeral

Teachey, Remus 

PINK HILL - Remus Teachey, 81, of 410 N. Front St., died Sunday, May 11, 
2008 at his home.    was preceded in death by his parents, Graham and Nettie 
Teachey. He worked at W.H. Jones and Co. for 23 years, and owned and 
operated Teachey's Supermarket of Pink Hill and Deep Run for 30 years. 
Remus was a member of American Legion Post 379 and Pink Hill Presbyterian 
Church. 
A funeral will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday May 13 in the Pink Hill Funeral Home 
Chapel with the Revs. Ann Brinson and Jerry Bron officiating. Burial will take place 
in Oak Ridge Memorial Park of Pink Hill.  Survivors include wife Gaynelle Teachey, 
son Gary Teachey and wife Virginia of Wilmington, sister Ruth Townsend of Blowing 
Rock; grandchildren Shelly Kiger and husband Dayton of Apex and Leslie Teachey 
of Wilmington; great-grandchild Avery Kiger and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ivey Jr., Charles Cresson "C. C." 

June 5, 1927 ? May 12, 2008 
MOUNT OLIVE - Charles Cresson "C. C." Ivey, Jr., 80, went to be with his Lord 
Monday, May 12, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center surrounded by his family. C. C. 
was born in Duplin County and was a life-long resident of the Summerlin Crossroads 
community. He was the son of the late C. Cresson and Eunice Vause Ivey. C. C. 
was the loving husband of 56 years to the late Elnora Rouse Ivey. He was also 
preceded in death by a brother, Major Foy Ivey, Sr. He graduated from Kenansville 
High School in the Class of 1943 and was active in keeping this class of friends 
together through numerous reunions over the years. He served in World War II in 
the United States Navy in the south Pacific on the U.S.S. Bowditch. C. C. was 
retired farmer and tobacco warehouseman, associated for over 60 years with 
tobacco markets in Farmville, Wallace, and Goldsboro. A veracious lover of family 
history, he shared his knowledge of family trees and events with many. He was a 
true archivist of local history. A life-long member of Bethel United Methodist Church, 
he has served as Superintendent, Administrative Council Chair, Sunday school 
teacher, and Lay Leader/Speaker. C. C. also served on the Board of Directors of 
Tri-County Electric Membership Cooperatives (EMC) for 31 years, serving as vice 
president of the Board for a number of years. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. 
Wednesday evening, May 14, at the chapel of Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive 
with the Revs. Lynwood Boyette, Mark Stephens, and Jerry Mitchell officiating. 
Visitation with the family will follow immediately after the services. Graveside 
services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday morning, May 15, at the Swinson-Ivey 
Cemetery near the homeplace. He is survived by his daughter, Catherine I. Fonvielle 
and her husband John, and his sons, Charles C. III, and G. Rouse and his wife Cindy, 
all of Mount Olive; five grandchildren, John Nathan Fonvielle, III and his wife Amanda, 
of Wallace, Thomas I. Fonvielle, of Boone; John Daniel Ivey and his wife Rebekah, of 
Mount Olive, Abbie C. Ivey of Greensboro, and her fianc? Alan Williams, and Julie R. 
Ivey, of Mount Olive; and one great-grandchild, Elizabeth Ivey Fonvielle, of Wallace 
and a host of loving nephews and nieces. He is also survived by his Kitty Askins 
Hospice family, who has served him compassionately in his "home away from home"

KINSTON - J oyce Lou Barwick Johnson, 70, of Kinston, passed away on Sunday, 
May 11, 2008. Born in Lenoir County on August 26, 1937, she was the daughter 
of the late Walter and Nellie Cauley Barwick. She will be remembered as a loving 
wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed gardening; 
spending time caring for her family, and lending her support to numerous charities. 
Joyce was a lifetime member of Rivermont Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, 
she was preceded in death by her sisters, Edna Barwick Grady, Eldred Barwick and 
Shirley Barwick Beasley; and her brother, W. C. "Bill" Barwick. Survivors include her 
loving husband of 54 years, Kenneth Roosevelt Johnson of the home; daughter, 
Barbara Johnson of Kinston; sons, Walter Johnson, Kenneth Johnson, Jr. and special 
friend Jackie Alphin, and Woody Johnson, all of Kinston, and Victor Johnson and wife 
Donna, of Deep Run; grandchildren, Lynwood Earl Goff, Jr. and wife Nicki, of New Bern, 
Christy Hobbs and husband Shane, and Bessie G. Flores and husband Luis, all of

Jones, Kathleen D. 

NEVADA CITY, Calif. - Kathleen D. Jones, age 54, died at a local medical facility May 
6, 2008, following a brief illness. Born on June 21, 1953, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to 
William Ward Daniels and Mary Magdalen Dominguez Daniels. As a child, Kathleen's 
family traveled to North Carolina, Tennessee and Louisiana, and made many moves
due to her father's work for DuPont. Kathleen attended high school in Kinston, North 
Carolina and later attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill where she 
received her degree in Dental Hygiene. On October 19, 1974, she married James 
Herbert Jones Jr. in Kinston, North Carolina and they moved to Meadow Vista, 
California where Kathleen worked as bookkeeper and hygienist in her husband's dental 
office. In 1980 they relocated the dental office to Grass Valley and their home to Nevada 
City; she continued to work in her husband's dental office as the bookkeeper until her 
passing. Kathleen was a member of The Single Action Shooting Society #20630 and 
loved Cowboy Action Shooting in which she participated under an alias of Pay Back 
Princess. She was a gourmet cook and loved fine wines. Her husband James Jones Jr.; 
son James Kristopher Jones and his wife Michelle Jones; sister Rebecca Marks of Alen, 
Texas; brothers, Dr. William Daniels of Georgia and Douglas Daniels of North Carolina 
along with several nieces and nephews, survive Kathleen. Private family services were

SEVEN SPRINGS ? Rachel Moore Jones, 74, of 6018 N.C. Highway 55 East, entered 
eternal rest on Saturday evening surrounded by her family at Kitty Askins Hospice 
Center. 
Raised in Wayne County, she was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac "Ike" Jones; 
a son, Michael Anthony Jones; her parents, George and Annie Moore; and three brothers, 
George, Kenneth and Billy Ray Moore. 
She assisted her father and husband on many farms throughout Lenoir, Wayne and Duplin 
Counties for most of her years and during her later years she enjoyed reading, attended 
Unity Free Will Baptist Church in Deep Run, spending time with her family, talking with 
family and friends on the phone, sharing her homemade candy and sweets and just 
enjoying her life. 
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 PM in the chapel of Shumate-Faulk Funeral
 Home with the Rev. Wade Parker officiating. 
Graveside services and visitation will follow at the Seven Springs United Methodist 
Church Cemetery in Seven Springs. At other times the family will be meeting at her 
residence. 
She leaves to cherish memories her son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Patricia Jones 
of Seven Springs; two granddaughters, Brandi Massey and husband, Matt, of Seven 
Springs, Sheri Pabst and husband, Brad, of LaGrange; and her most precious 
great-grandson, Brady Douglas Pabst; two sisters, Virginia Byrd of Albertson and Hazel 
Hinson of Mount Olive; a special friend, Bessie Weeks of Seven Springs; and a host of 
nieces, nephews and cousins. 
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to her caregiver, Brenda Carter, 
Dr. David Kemp of Goldsboro, the seventh floor nursing staff of Wayne Memorial Hospital 
and the staff of Kitty Askins Hospice Center for all the wonderful care given to "Grandma 
Rachel" during her brief and quick illness.

PINK HILL ? Remus Teachey, 81, of 410 N. Front St., died Sunday, May 11, 2008 at 
his home. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Graham and Nettie Teachey. He worked at 
W.H. Jones and Co. for 23 years, and owned and operated Teachey's Supermarket of 
Pink Hill and Deep Run for 30 years. Remus was a member of American Legion Post 
379 and Pink Hill Presbyterian Church.

Abbott, Samuel Hurd 

SNOW HILL - Samuel Hurd Abbott, 87, passed away on Tuesday, May 20, 2008, 
following a period of declining health. He had been a resident of Britthaven of Snow 
Hill since early 2001. Sam Abbott served in the U.S. Army during WWII with 
assignments in France, Germany and Austria as a member of the Rainbow Division. 
He was awarded the Bronze Star for providing logistic support under enemy fire by 
Major General Harry Collins. After military service, Sam was employed by Servair 
Aviation Corp. at Stallings Field (Kinston) in the 40's and early 50's. In 1958 he 
attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Miami, Fla. after which he was 
employed for 26 years by Pratt-Whitney Corporation in West Palm Beach, Fla. 
He was an Aircraft and Engine Mechanic in the development group for the jet 
engine in the Air Force's famed F-15 Eagle frequently seen and/or heard in 
eastern North Carolina skies. He was born in Raleigh, N.C. on January 13, 1921, 
to Lunsford and Alice (Newcomb) Abbott who relocated to Kinston after building a 
home on West Highland Avenue. Sam grew up in Kinston and was a member of 
the Grainger High School Class of 1938. He never married and was predeceased 
by his parents and sister, Alice Bayard Abbott. Graveside services will be take 
place at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 22, 2008, in a three generation Abbott family 
plot in Kinston's Maplewood Cemetery. Edwards Funeral Home is in charge of

Chase, Elizabeth A. 


KINSTON - Elizabeth Anderson Chase, 101, of Kinston, died Monday, May 19, 
2008, at Kitty Askins Hospice Center. Mrs. Chase was born December 9, 1906, 
in Pitt County to the late Lawrence Richard and Nettie Fussell Anderson. She was 
wife of the late Gurney Chase and was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Ray 
"Bud" Chase; two sisters, Jean A. Joyner and Emma A. Rouse; and four brothers, 
Lawrence R. Anderson Jr., Joe A. Anderson, Edwin Anderson and James Anderson. 
Mrs. Chase was a homemaker who enjoyed crocheting. She made beautiful 
hand-stitched baby clothes and provided childcare to several children following her 
husband's death. Mrs. Chase was a longtime member of Walnut Creek Free Will 
Baptist Church. She later joined Sandy Bottom Baptist Church following her move to 
the Sandy Bottom Area. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, 
2008, from Rouse Funeral Home with the Rev. Gurney Chase officiating. A private 
burial will be held at the Rollins Family Cemetery. Mrs. Chase is survived by five 
children, Elizabeth Pittman of Kinston, Geraldine Barwick of Wilmington, Edwin 
Chase and wife Dorothy, of La Grange, Billy Chase and wife Betty, of Snow Hill, 
Gurney Chase and wife Minnie Lee, of Kinston; daughter-in-law, Margaret Chase of 
La Grange; two sisters, Nettie Whitfield of Moss Hill and Nancy Lapp of Zebulon; 
sister-in-law, Lucille F. Anderson of La Grange; brother-in-law, Marion Rouse of 
La Grange; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and 14 great great-grandchildren.

GOLDSBORO ? George Clontz Kornegay, Sr., 77, died suddenly on Monday, May 
19, 2008, at Wayne Memorial Hospital. George was born in Duplin County on October 
7, 1930, to the late Henry Street Kornegay and Effie Lee Smith Kornegay. He served 
his country in the National Guard with 36 years of service and retired with the rank of 
Major. George retired as the central office foreman for Southern Bell Telephone 
Company and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. Graveside services will be 
held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Wayne Memorial Park with the Rev. Jerry Mitchell 
officiating. Military honors will follow the service. George is survived by his wife of 57

GRIFTON - Clarence Willis Leonard, 81, died Saturday, May 17, 2008. Mr. Leonard 
was born in Nash Co., on September 29, 1926 to William and Hattie Reams Leonard. 
He is preceded in death by his parents. Mr. Leonard was a United States Army 
veteran who served in WW II. He retired from DuPont Industries in 1985 after 33 
years of service and was an active member of the First Christian Church in Grifton. 
Survivors include wife Ivylynn "Lynn" of the home; son Tony Leonard and wife, 
Paula, of Mooresville, NC; daughter Debra Ryan and husband, Dennis, of Evans,

KINSTON - Max Noftsger, 88, of 1215 Sutton Dr., died Monday, May 19, 2008, at 
Lenoir Memorial Hospital. Max was born in Knoxville, Iowa to the late Glenn O. 
Noftsger and June (Powers) Noftsger. He was a member of the Columbia Methodist 
Church in Columbia, Iowa. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian 
Church chapel at 2 p.m. Thursday May 22, 2008, with the Rev. Mary Gale officiating.

Adam (Virginia) Patterson of Whittier, Calif. and multiple nieces and nephews. Max 
and Mary Noftsger celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in 2007. They were 
married June 29, 1947, at the First Presbyterian Church of Hastings, Neb. Max 
served as a Captain in the Army Air Corps four years during WWII as a fighter pilot 
with the 76th Fighter Squadron ? 23rd Fighter Group ? 14th Air Force and flew with 
the Flying Tigers in China. He was shot down and wounded and received the Purple 
Heart. In addition, he was awarded the Air Medal for meritorious achievement, the 
Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the 
Distinguished Flying Cross awarded to any officer or enlisted member of the United 
States armed forces who distinguishes himself or herself in combat in support of 
operations by "heroism or extraordinary achievement while participating in an aerial 
flight." In addition, Max received the "Chinese" medal from the Chinese Ambassador 
to Taiwan and Anna Chennault, wife of General Claire Chennault. Max also served 
for two years in the Air Force during the Korean War as site Controller in Northern 
Michigan. Max was a past Commander of the Kinston Power Squadron where he 
taught classes on boating safety and proper boating procedures. He received the 
"Full Navigation" certificate and created the Power Squadron National Training 
program. In addition, he was awarded the "Tony Carey Award" for outstanding 
contribution to the Kinston Power Squadron. Max worked as a Rural Mail Carrier 
for the US Postal Service for 39 years in both Iowa and North Carolina, retiring in 
1980. He received several safety awards while employed by the Postal Service. In

husband of 52 years Bodell Outlaw and her parents Jacob and Virginia Carter Deaver.

Lt. Col. Arthur Henry King		

FOREST CITY - Lt. Col. Arthur Henry King, 77, of Forest City, N.C., formerly of 
Kinston, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2008. Born in Kinston on January 26, 
1931, he was the son of the late Herman Richard King and Rachel Wetherington 
King. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Norma King 
and son, Arthur H. King, Jr. He was a retired Col. with the U.S. Air Force and retired
former owner and president of Lakeside Mills, Inc. Col. King received his Bachelor's 
degree from East Carolina University and Master's degree from Ohio State. He was 
a decorated U.S. Air Force Veteran, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross, the
 Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, 
Combat Readiness Medal, Small Arms Expert Service Award, Air Force Longevity 
Service Award, and Air Force Commendation. Survivors include his daughters, 
Johnny Sue King of Wilson, Sharon Kirk of Ft. Worth, Texas, Susan Thompson of 
Locust Grove, Ga.; sons, Richard King of Wilson, Aaron King of Seven Springs, 
Bryan King and Kim King, both of Rutherfordton, Larry Graves of Arlington, Texas;

GRIFTON - Laytham Formy-Duval, 80, of Grifton, passed away on Thursday May 29, 2008. 
Mr. Formy-Duval was born in Brunswick County on August 4, 1927, to the late Alma and 
Dessie Milligan Formy-Duval. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his 
daughter, Brenda Dawson; and sister, Minnie Erva Nance. He was retired from DuPont with 
32 years of service; an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He dearly loved 
his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Ezzell

Murphrey, Durward R. 

FARMVILLE - Mr. Durward Richard Murphrey, 78, passed away Thursday afternoon, 
May 29, 2008, at his residence. A native of Greene County, he was born October 6, 
1929, the son of Durward B. and Nolah Smith Murphrey. Mr. Murphrey was a retired 
tobacco farmer and owner of the former Murphrey's Mini Mart stores. He had supported 
his community as a former member of the Greene County Board of Education, where 
he served for 18 years, as a founding member of the Castoria Fire and Rescue 
Department, and as a member of Mt. Herman United Methodist Church. Funeral 
services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 1, at the chapel of Taylor-Tyson Funeral 
Service with the Reverend Cliff Harvell officiating. Interment will follow at the Snow Hill 
Cemetery. His surviving family includes his wife, Cornelia Mills Murphrey; a daughter, 
Donna Murphrey Haggerty and husband Ed, of Snow Hill; sons, Durward R. Murphrey,
