Obituary of Mildred Cox Bland -- 2000

Mildred Cox Bland, 102, formerly of Grainger Ave., died Sunday, Dec. 17, 2000, in 
Portsmouth, Va.  Mrs. Bland was born in Kinston to the late James J. and Jennie 
Cox and was one of 12 children.  She was a retired nurse and had worked at the old 
Parrott Memorial Hospital and had also done private nursing.  She was a charter 
member and honorary member of Kinston Chapter 53, Order of Eastern Star and a 
life member of Neuse Chapter 347 OES where she had received her 50-year pin.  
She was also an honorary member of the following Eastern Star chapters; Greenville 
149, Goldsboro 54, and Farmville 146.  She was a long-time member of Queen Street 
Methodist Church and was the widow of Lender Duke Bland.  Survivors include a 
daughter, Mrs. G.R. “Jennie” House of Portsmouth, Va.; two grandchildren, George 
R. House III of Virginia Beach, Va. and Bettye House of Portsmouth, Va.; and many 
great- and great-great nieces and nephews.    A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. 
Wednesday, in Queen Street Methodist Church by the Rev. Francis Daniel.  Burial 
will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.  Friends may visit with the family one hour prior 
to the service at the church.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made 
to Queen Street Methodist Church or to Neuse Chapter 347 Order of Eastern Star.
