A SHP spokesperson said Miranda Elizabeth Tyndall, 17, of Stroud’s Corner Road in Deep Run, died shortly after surgery at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. The SHP accident report indicates the three-car accident occurred at 4:35 p.m. at the intersection of 258 South and Stroud’s Corner Road, approximately 5.8 miles south of Kinston. Tyndall was one of three passengers in a vehicle driven by Matthew Robert Hill, 17, of Murphy Road in Pink Hill. Hill — also a South Lenoir student — was driving a 1992 model Buick. The other passengers in Hill’s vehicle were Helen Chau, 18, of Leighton Drive, Pink Hill, and Perla Arroyo, 17, of Old Pink Hill Road, Pink Hill. The driver of the second car, Krystal M. Blass, 26, of Black Harper Road, Kinston, was driving a 2000 model Ford. The driver of the third car, Lois S. Hoffman, 77, of Jefferson Drive, Kinston, was driving a 2002 model Nissan. According to the narrative attached to the SHP accident report as written by Trooper Jackie Rogers, Hill and Hoffman were both traveling south on U.S. 258, while Blass was traveling north. When Hill attempted to make a left turn onto Stroud’s Corner Road, he turned into the path of Blass’s vehicle. Blass’s vehicle struck Hill’s vehicle in the passenger doors and sideswiped Hoffman’s vehicle. The SHP spokesperson said that Miranda Tyndall was “very communicative at the scene.” She was airlifted from the scene via EastCare to Pitt County Memorial Hospital where she underwent several surgeries. Blass, Chau, Hill and Arroyo suffered what the SHP described as serious but not life-threatening injuries and were transported to Lenoir Memorial Hospital. Hoffman suffered no apparent injuries. South Lenoir High School junior dies as a result of vehicle accident The teen who was behind the wheel of a deadly wreck says he is sorry for what happened. Matthew Hill has been charged by troopers with failure to yield right of way after they say he turned in front of a vehicle on Highway 258 Tuesday afternoon. "I looked, I looked twice, and the sun was in my eyes so, and I thought it was clear. At the last second out of the corner of my eye I saw a flash of red and the next thing I know the car hit and spun," Hill told WITN News. Killed in the accident was 17-year-old Miranda Tyndall. "I want to tell them that I'm sorry that they lost their daughter and that I'm sorry that I was driving the car that caused that. I'm just so sorry for that," Hill said. The accident happened on Highway 258 and Stroud's Corner Road. "God took her for a reason, I don't know why," said the victim's mother, Angie Tyndall. Tyndall was a junior at South Lenoir High School. Her mother says her daughter had big aspirations. "She wanted to go to Los Angeles, California, somewhere and she was going to draw for movies. But she wouldn't leave home, she never left home so I don't know how she was going to do it," her mom told WITN's Ken Heineck. Funeral arrangements for the teen were announced Thursday afternoon. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at South Lenoir High School. Tyndall's funeral will be Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the high school, followed by burial at Pine Lawn Cemetery. The family has requested casual dress as that is what Tyndall would have wanted. South Lenoir High School student Miranda Tyndall honored during prayer vigil Comments 3 | Recommend 0 January 23, 2010 12:00 AM Chris Lavender Staff Writer DEEP RUN — A prayer vigil was held Friday night at South Lenoir High School and reminded those who knew Miranda Elizabeth Tyndall how special a girl she was. Tyndall died Wednesday at Pitt County Memorial Hospital from injuries she sustained in a three-car accident a day earlier at the intersection of 258 South and Stroud’s Corner Road. Tyndall would have celebrated her 18th birthday Friday. “I thank everyone for coming out here tonight,” said Miranda’s mother, Angie Tyndall. “I want to tell Matthew’s family it’s going to be OK. We don’t blame him for what happened. Miranda wouldn’t have blamed him.” Matthew Hill, 17, of Pink Hill was driving the vehicle that Miranda was a passenger in when the accident occurred. Hill attended the prayer vigil as well. “She was a wonderful person,” Hill said. South Lenoir students Amanda Smith, 17, and Courtney Smith, 17, were among about 70 people who attended the vigil. They had known Miranda for up to 10 years. “She didn’t talk much until she got to know you,” Amanda Smith said. “She was a great artist. Miranda designed the cover for her eighth-grade yearbook.” Courtney Smith also recalled Miranda’s warm smile. “She had a heart of gold,” Courtney Smith said. “She would do anything for you.” Miranda’s grandfather, Terry Barnette, said Miranda would be missed. He reminded everyone that Friday was his granddaughter’s birthday. “She is 18 today,” Barnette said. “She is alive in spirit.” Leigh Anne Dunn and Shawn Dunn were among Miranda’s close friends. They visited Miranda at Pitt County Memorial Hospital on Wednesday afternoon. “We saw her at about 4 p.m.,” Leigh Anne Dunn said. “She was asking us why everyone was making such a fuss about her.” Leigh said she left the hospital that day, thinking that Miranda was going to be OK. Hours before the accident, Miranda and several of her friends spent time at Neuseway Park Nature Center swinging on the swings near the Neuse River. Angie said Miranda used her flip camera phone to record her friends on the swings. Angie said she has watched this recording several times since Miranda died. “They were just out having fun playing like a bunch of 2-year-olds,” Angie said. Her funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at South Lenoir’s auditorium. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the same location. South Lenoir Principal Mike King said preparations were underway to honor Tyndall and her family during the coming week. “Miranda was an outstanding artist,” King said. “She was a special student.” King said he enjoyed speaking with Tyndall in South Lenoir’s hallways and said she had an appreciation for technology and agriculture. Tyndall was a student in South Lenoir teacher Donald Stanley’s automotive technology class. “I have known her family for years,” Stanley said. “We grew up in the same neighborhood.” Stanley said Tyndall was a good, solid student and she wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty with automotive grease during classroom instruction. Her classmates in the automotive class are taking Tyndall’s death hard, according to Stanley. “Benito Merritt sat next to her in class,” Stanley said. “He told me today he couldn’t sleep last night. Miranda’s death has torn him up. He is having a tough time with it.” South Lenoir teacher Elizabeth Rouse taught Tyndall in her physical science class. According to Rouse, Tyndall was a quiet and cared for others. “She loved to read and kept herself occupied,” Rouse said. “She was very nice and got along with everyone.” South Lenoir guidance counselor Danita Sheppard also recalled Tyndall’s life. Sheppard said all of South Lenoir’s students will return Wednesday after a two-day break. It will be the first time the students will be back since Tyndall died. Students didn’t attend school every day this week because of testing. “I expect Wednesday will be a rough day,” Sheppard said. “We contacted the central office and plan to have additional counselors here for students, if needed.” During the funeral, Tyndall’s mother, Angie, said balloons will be released in honor of her 18th birthday. Angie thanked the Lenoir County Schools community for helping her and her family get through these tough times. “Everyone has been wonderful to us,” Angie Tyndall said.
