Published in the Free Press from 9/17/2008 - 9/20/2008 Massey, Amie Jene KINSTON - Amie Jene Massey, age 29, of Kinston, N.C. formally of Wilmington, N.C. passed away Sunday Sept. 14, 2008. If the value of a person's life is measured by the love and joy given to others, Amie Jene Massey leaves this world wealthy beyond measure. From the time she left the care of her loving foster parents, Brenda and Douglas Walston, to be-come by adoption the cherished only child of Philip Eugene and Carolyn Jordan Massey, Amie touched an ever increasing circle of family and friends. Her buoyant spirit, quick smile and fighting persistence in the face of lifelong challenges including cystic fibrosis and diabetes have been an inspiration for those around her. Amie was born on April 28, 1979, and adopted before her first birthday. On her father's side, she became granddaughter to Mark and Percelle Massey, who recognized during their lives how special she was; niece to Mark and Judy Massey, Greg and Linda Massey, and Doug and Elaine Massey; and cousin to Leah, Zack, Alan and Kristen. On her mother's side, she became granddaughter to Joseph and Ethel Jordan, who will always remember her first steps and her evening calls with excited accounts of special outings and many jokes. She was the only niece of Aunt B and Uncle John Morgan and cousin to Matthew, Jonathan and Travis. A multitude of other special rela-tives included her Aunt-Granny Jane and Aunt-Granny Louise in Maryland, along with Aunt Lettie and Uncle Bob in Florida (who rarely won a card game if Amie was on the opposing team). Amie's family reached much farther: At Duke, her family included many special doctors, nurses and therapists who worked with her throughout her life; some even wore Goofy ears or brought her pancake breakfasts in intensive care to show how much her love, unflinching courage and laughter meant to them. Even before Amie started school, Miss Janet helped her overcome speech difficulties and taught her to love all things pig. At CDC and in New Hanover County's special education program, her family and friends included the teachers who helped her achieve life skills that made it possible for her to transition to an adult program at Caswell Center in Kinston. There, the loving members of her Caswell family gathered round to make possible an independent life, a job she loved, and further accomplishments that included gardening, cooking, completion of high school, and state recognition for her flower arranging. Throughout her life, Amie had the prayers and sup-port of an even larger family in the many brothers and sisters of the Wilmington congrega-tions of Jehovah's Witnesses, and she demonstrated her faith and beliefs in even the small-est of things. Amie loved so much in life. She carried hundreds of photos with her at all times to share stories of her pets and family and friends with anyone who would listen. She celebrated her good days with diet Dr. Peppers and phone calls to tell others that she loved them. She adored watching movies and knew the plots of most Disney and comedy videos in her closet full collection.. She knew how to have fun and to make others laugh, even when the times were dire. She breathed life into everything around her, and when that breath was no longer there, she asked only to rest. She will be remembered for her joy for living; her example serves as a reminder of the important things in life and the courage needed to live it. Memorial services will be held first at her home at the Caswell Center in Kinston, N.C. at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept.19, 2008, and then at 2 p.m. Saturday Sept. 20, 2008, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 4806 Gordon Road, Wilmington, NC. Throughout her life, Amie had the prayers and support of an even larger family in the many brothers and sisters of the Wilmington congrega-tions of Jehovah's Witnesses, and she demonstrated her faith and beliefs in even the small-est of things. Published in the Free Press from 9/22/2008 - 9/26/2008 Murphy, Pamela O. Sept. 22, 1952- Feb. 29, 2008 TAMPA, Fla. - Pam always had a knack for timing and her death was no exception. Once every four years, time finally catches up with itself. All of the missed hours and discarded minutes accumulate to form the oddity that is February 29th. A leap year. These anomalies in time are few and far between, but are definitely cherished moments that carry an enchanting sense of wonderment. Mysterious and alluring, every four years the world is able to collectively slow its pace, take a breather and start over again. No one would have ever wished Pam to leave this world so suddenly, but now that the time has come, it's only fitting that she chose February 29th to depart this life. Stalked by a medley of ailments throughout the years, her body was simply tired of playing this game of hide-and-seek. The stalkers became too stealthy and the hiding places too few and much like the date February 29, her body chose to slow its pace, take a breather and start over again - although not in an apparent form to any of us. The week leading up to her passing was one of the coldest weeks the city saw this winter, but on this particular day, the cold spell broke, the temperature rose and the clouds left the sky as if clearing a path for her ascent. That evening, Pam left this world behind and drifted off into the most beautiful of Florida nights. Pam was laid to rest in West-view Cemetery in her hometown of Kinston, N.C. She is survived by her daughter Katie, ex-husband Mark, boy-friend Robert and dogs Gracie and Boudreau. Sign the guest book at www.kinston.com.
