KINSTON COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE

History

This institution was first organized by the energetic labors and assiduous care of Eld. Joseph H. Foy. He, seeing that the people of this section needed another school besides the good one already here, with his rare gift of speech soon made it clear to them that all that was needed was simply action.
In September, 1876, the Kinston Collegiate Institution began its career. The number of pupils, at the opening of the first session, was thirty-six. At the close, more that a hundred names were upon the register.
Three years ago, after the removal of Mr. Foy to Wilson, the Institute was reorganized, with the present management. A liberal patronage has rewarded the efforts of the teachers. That a continuance of it may be deserved, those who have charge of the Institute pledge themselves to still greater exertions.

Charter

The Institute was chartered by the General Assembly at its session of 1876-77. Therefore it enjoys the same privileges as those of any other literary institution in the State.

Location

Kinston is the county seat of Lenoir county. It has a population of nearly two thousand. It has railroad communication, East and West, by the A. & N. C. R. R. It is at the head of steam navigation on Neuse River.
For more than thirteen years it has enjoyed a degree of health unsurpassed by any section of the State. The physicians of the place will bear ample testimony to the truth of this assertion. And additional evidence is furnished by the removal of a large number of families to Kinston for the purpose of educating their children.
The Annual Session does not embrace the three warm months of June, July, and August.

Religious Privileges

Each student is allowed full liberty to attend divine worship at either of the churches in the town or country. Four denominations of Christians have worship every Sunday, viz. Disciples, Episcopalians,, Baptists, and Methodists.
One of the fundamental principles of this Institution is, that the teachers shall be distributred among at least three of the religious denominations of this section.

PLAN OF INSTRUCTION

Pupils are distributed, for convenience of instruction, among three departments.

Primary Department

This is under the sole management of Mrs. Richard H. Lewis.

Pupils are taught the elementary principles of the English language, including Reading, Spelling,, Writing,, Primary Geography, Rudiments of Arithmetic and Elementary Grammar.

This department includes also those who have made sufficient progress to entitle them to enter the Junior English classes.

Text Books of Primary Department:----Holmes Speller; Holmes First, Second and Third Readers; Appletons Fourth Reader; Maurys First Lessons in Geography; Maurys World we Live in; Davies Primary Arithmetic; Davies Elements of Written Arithmetic; Clarks Brief Grammar; Appletons Model Copy-Books.

Daily instruction is also given in the sounds of letters and phonetics. Weekly oral instruction is given in elocution. Careful and unremitting attention is given to the habits and manners of the little members of this department.

Intermediate Department

Pupils who have passed a satisfactory examination on the studies of the Junior English classes, are advanced to this department.

Pupils who have passed the examinations of the intermediate studies with those who enter the school prepared for it are embraced in this department.

Elocution and Composition.

Friday afternoons are devoted to Declamations, Reading of Compositions and Reading of Selections. Much attention is especially given to compositions, being always written at the desk without any external aid.

Department of Music
Mrs. Anna L. Davis, Instructor.

This Institution recognizses the imnportance of Music in education, and is satisfied that no more thorough training in that Science can be found in any school of similar grade in the State.

Instruction is given on Piano and Organ to the regular class in this department. Every morning at opening of exercises and every afternoon at closing of the days duties, the entire body of pupils in the chapel unite in the singing, to the accompaniment of the Organ.

A very handsome and costly piano has just been purchased and added to the number of instruments already in use--thus furnishing ample means for instruction in this important branch of education.

REPORTS

Monthly reports are made out and sent to parents and guardians, containing accurate statements of deportment and scholarship in each study.
An Annual Report is read at each Commencement giving a rÈsumÈ of the years work, together with the names of all pupils who by their conduct and scholarship are deserving of honorable mention.

Roll of Honor

At the end of each month, a list is made out and published in the Kinston Journal and Watch-Tower, of the names of those students who have recited five-sixth perfect lessons and have been absent from no duty or roll call, and have not been tardy and who have shown perfect deportment during that month.

Time of Entrance

It is a matter of very great importance that students should enter at the beginning of the Term. Even a few days delay will cause serious inconvenience both to teachers and pupils.

New Building

A large, commodious chapel is in process of erection, which will furnish ample accomodations for visitors at Commencement; and add greatly to the convenience of the pupils during the session. The building will be ready by June 10th, 1880.
